Steering box with less turns

Hi,

Has anyone successfully converted their steering box (non power assisted, 2WD) to use less turns from lock to lock? I am rebuilding my 78 F100 and I would like to find out if it is possible, my truck is RHD.

I dislike having to turn the wheel 2-3 times to do a u-turn, can the steering box be modified (different sized gears inside of it)? So that it feels more like I'm driving a car, I'm not worried about the increased steering effort.

I'll be having the box rebuilt and I was wondering whether something can be done while it's apart.

Thank you

Check with Red Head steering gear. I got a quick ratio box for 77 f250 with power steering. Also has a needle bearing at the steering arm instead of a plain bearing. Maybe they can do manual boxes as well, or maybe convert to PS.

Are they from around here? Lol I'm in Sydney. I'd rather not convert to power steer since my truck is original.

Thanks though

Nope. Red Head is in Seattle, WA USA.
They do excellent work though.

yeah, and they also kept my deposit for 3 months after they received my core when I sent the one in from my excursion. So I got 3 months of finance charges for no reason until I called and told them I was filing a chargeback. Basically I had to bully them into refunding it. They do NOT have their **** together. The people I talked to mostly sounded stoned and disinterested.

Everything went smooth with my transaction. I sent my box to be rebuilt so there was no core deposit. I sent it UPS, took 4 days to get there and I had it back a week later.

on the group buy thread, some people had no problems, but at least a handful had the same experience I did. Multiple calls, no core deposit returned, salesman who sounded like they couldn't find their *** from a receipt in a file, and ended up having to threaten them to get their returns processed. Worth mentioning one guy was shipped a defective unit, was blown and leaking straight out the box. They refunded his money, but that shouldn't have happened if they test things like they say they do.

Hi,

Looking in the brochure for my 78 F100 I can see that the steering specifications are recirculating ball steering box; Ratio 24:1

What does that ratio mean and am I trying to get a lower ratio or higher?

Thank you

You would want a lower ratio for faster steering... say 20:1. Steering effort would increase.

I just thought i'd chime in if anyone's on the fence about using Red Head after reading this thread but my experience with Red Head was nothing but professional.

Good to know. I need to check all my front end parts to be sure, but I'll probably be sending them my box this winter.
