just to update everybody. removed turbo and found oil coming through from manifolds so looks like the problem is the imbalance in No1 cylinder probably the rings passing even though this has just had a rebuild.
Hi does anyone know what the elctrical connection is on the front of the turbo pedestal as mine has welded into the what looks like a solenoid but i don't know what it is to order a new one.

Im going to throw this out there.. Not to be an ***.. But how confident are you in that they did a complete rebuild or just fix what they thought was wrong in the first place ? By the sound of what you have said. they didn't know sh#t about your motor. Why would they even break parts if they were good mechanics ? sound to me like they pulled a fast one on you. also you need to check the UVCH again. even though they said they replaced the harness, you need to check the other end of the wire harness for a burnt pin. that will also cause a failure. sorry you have to work on it again in under a year
yes i think so, pulled engine out again this wkend and found bolts crossed, sheared or loose. engine going back to rebuilders and seeing a solicitor later in wk.
Did you do this modification to your NEW harnesses when you installed them or were they the newer style that have different clips that do not come unclipped? Did you see or do the work/ were you involved in the work?
hi all, the saga continues since last post truck has run well but now although engine sounds really sweet since I rebuilt turbo and fitted a wicked wheel but seems to lack power when towing. I'm getting puffs of blue smoke from exhaust when I put my foot down and exhaust always smells oily. headers and up pipes to turbo are coking up and recently fitted a new 4" exhaust and this is coking up after only a couple of months ( not a daily driver) does anyone have any ideas I have read it could be low fuel pressure or hpop pressure and have ordered some gauges to check these. don't want to take engine out again.
Oh my.... I see you're across the pond, so the BEST map won't provide you with any help.
Blue smoke, but not white? Oil dripping out the exhaust? I saw you mention incompetent mechanics installed the engine. What is the state of your air intake filter? Take the oil filler cap off and place it upside-down on the filler neck while the engine is idling.
You are likely very far from support that is really familiar with the 7.3L. You may need to get some help from the OBDII port (Torque Pro or another scan tool with logging capability) - because the truck is not getting younger. The OBDII data will not likely yield any insight on an internal oil leak - but it just might. The OBDII will show bad injector O-rings or loose injectors.
Do you have any other symptoms, like a loud knocking that beats at the rhythm of a single cylinder? If so - don't panic yet. It could be a noisy injector.
when I last had it scanned on this problem there were not any codes and engine sounds really sweet. just feels like a lack of power towing and the exhaust coking up. the smoke comes out on initial start up then only if I give it plenty of throttle like going up hill just get a squirt of smoke then ok but exhaust does smell when running. how much is a scan tool likely to cost me as currently have to drive 50 miles and pay £60 for the scan.
Starting from scratch and sparing no expense - I spent $400 on a tablet, tablet mount, OBDII/Bluetooth adapter, and several apps to experiment with. You can use your smart phone, throw the dice on a $20 adapter, spend $5 to $10 on an app to read and log the powertrain parameters, and Bob's your uncle. Total cost translates to £20.
