VIN Decoding

This is what the door tag numbers are:

F10GNC00376
117 M F100 ZU4 G 12J
04600 1976 21

I tried to upload a picture of it, but it keeps giving an error message. Any help here would be appreciated.

G = C4 (302) / 1961/78 F100/350: FoMoCo used the same G code for ALL A/T's.

One had to know which trans was available with what engine / 1979: G = C4 / K = C6.

2,900 lb. capacity rear axle is a Dana 44. Doesn't say that in the decode chart, but if you look up the application, it does.

Depending on application, 9" could have either 3,300 or 3,750 lb. axle capacity.

After the first Arab Oil Embargo ended, FoMoCo installed Dana 44's in some 1976/79 F100/150's in an effort to improve fuel economy.

In my first class of my senior year of college, we were talking about different numbers and how they are formed, such as social security numbers and vin numbers. The teacher didnt know what the vin number actually stood for, so I answered it and she acted like I was a ingenious lol

So thanks Mike and NumberDummy. You guys made me look smart! haha

Is there much difference in the 9" and the Dana? I have always heard the 9" was the top dog when it comes to rear ends. Is the ratio still 3.00? As far as I know the truck is pretty much stock with the exception of the motor. My uncle know who he sold it to, so he's trying to locate the original 302.

I just looked at the pictures and mine has a removeable carrier(comes out from the front). This would make it a 9", correct?

So, is it entirely possible (from what I read here) that my truck has a C4 (Code: G) behind that 400 instead of what I thought was a C6 (Code: K) ?

Up through '78 "G" just meant automatic trans, you had to know which one you had. It wasn't untill '79 that "G" specifically meant a C4.

I wasn't really sure about it. I took a guess on what I had. Can a C4 hold up against a 400 ?

You have a 1978 F250 w/a 400? If so, you have a C6 and a G trans code. C4's were not installed behind 351M/400's in F100/350's & Bronco's.

There was no K code denoting a C6 until 1979, and in 1979, G referred to C4 only.

1961/78: G could refer to: Ford-O-Matic (1961 F100 223), FX Cruise-O-Matic (1961/64 F100/250 223/292). FMX (1973/77 F350 300). MX Cruise-O-Matic (1965/67 F100/350 352, 1965/72 F350 300).

C4 (1965/74 F100/250 240/300, 1969/78 F100 302, 1975/78 F150 300/302, 1975/78 F250 300). C6 (1968/76 F100/350 360/390, 1973/78 F100/350 460, 1977/78 F100/350 351M/400, 1978 F100/150 300/302, 1978 F250 300).

1961/78 G: You had to know which A/T was available with what engine. Some people do, most do not. 1978: C6 optional for the first time with 300/302.
