need to replace steering box on my 76 250, 460 4 speed power steering divorced transfer case. are any other boxes the same as mine? there are just a couple of older fords at the local junkyard but none are the exact same. mine still works(very sloppy) but the where the shaft goes into the box is very loose and will pull out. you have to make sure that if you are driving not to pull on wheel. i have not taken it out of the truck yet to see if i could fix it. anyone else seen this problem? any help is greatly appreciated.
Save yourself a lot of grief and go with a Red Head Steering Gear rebuilt unit. They aren't that much more than the off the shelf units from the parts store and are light years ahead of any of them. Red-Head Steering Gears, Seattle WA - Red-Head Steering Gears Home
i agree 100 percent with mike. i replaced everything on my 78 and went ahead and put in a red head and my truck now handles better then it did new. don't mess around with wore out used steering gears and get a red head. plus they are very friendly and helpful on the phone.
And the Red Head units are TRUE rebuilt units, not just resealed.
Hard parts for these units have not been available for years, the "rebuilt" gears you buy from anyone are just resealed, not rebuilt. The one exception is Red Head. They regrind the raceways and install oversize ***** in the unit, they also cure a design flaw. In the original design the sector shaft runs in the cast iron housing with no bearing or bushings to ride on. When this wears it allows the sector shaft to wobble meaning the seal will never work properly and even a new seal will always leak. Red Head bores out the housing and installs needle bearings fixing the problem permanetly.
I'm a big fan of Red Head.
