I called Hindersons to order a "Red Head" steering gear box, and was asked how many "splines" the shaft had. Is there a way to find out without taking it off? I have an early 99 PSD 4x4. I do not have the time to do the job and would have to call a mechanic out to pull it off to check.
I still need to figure out my steering problem, all components are tight, but the truck wanders a bit down the road. Why are you replacing yours? Id be willing up grade the box for the ability of NORMAL steering.
Well, I saw a post on this forum last year that said steering could be tightened up by adjusting a screw on top of the unit. I did that, but went too far and now the steering is real tight. I tried to loosen it, but even after backing out the screw, it stayed tight. I then read about Hendersen's Red Head steering box, and it is supposed to be a lot better than the stock unit. They don't seem to advertise it anymore, but still have it for sale.
I just had my steering box replaced. I had to buy both a 32 and 36 spline one for my mechanic friend to have on hand because there is no way to know before you pull the old one which one you will need, or so I have been told by several people.
I too had to repalce my steering gear box. I was able to crawl under the truck and count the splines between the gear box and the pitman arm. Very small gap between the two but with a good light I could see them.
do you guys experience you steering wheel being lose turning left and right just a little before you feel tension? that how it is with mine and not sure what to do.
I found the number of splines on my unit is 32. Called Hendersons to order and they referred me direct to RedHead (www.redheadsteeringgears.com). That worked for me as the price is $100 less and it will be shipped out today.
I will let you all know how well the unit works in my truck.
