I ran across a '73 Highboy 4X4 this weekend that has what appears to be an additional transmission between the standard transmission and the divorced transfer case. Is this an aftermarket add-on or stock. In either case has anybody ever used this set-up and is it worth keeping in place
Sounds add on. The np 205 xcase has an anemic low range from what I understand, so someone may have added an extra splitter to lower the range. Woukd be kinda cool if its setup right but Ive never played with them, dunno how good they are.
I met a guy while off-roading who had a 78-ish F250 that had a similar setup. I think he just used two t-cases. He said the low-low range was awesome for crawling, but he went through u-joints every hour on the trail. I think he found some super-strong joints to solve the problem.
I've considered it myself, but not with a d44 front axle. Must upgrade axles first.
It takes a lot to snap the U-joints in these trucks unless they are getting a little twisted by misalignment at the same time. There are some good websites on drivelines and U-Joint applications mentioned here. Check the search function out for info.
