so i have a 2000 f250 super duty with a zf 5spd behind a 5.4 with an np 271? transfer case behind that. it seems that ford decided that the back half of the aluminum cased transmission is strong enough to support the transfer case so as a result the transmission has broken all the way around at the point where the transfer case bolts to it.
does anyone know if there is supposed to be a transfer case mount to the frame somewhere and ford just forgot to put it in? can the transmission case be welded back together without rebuilding the thing? can i build a transfer case cross member with a polyu mount or is there some reason that shouldn't be done?
does anyone have a back half transmission case that isn't broken that they would want to send me?
if i need to get another transmission do i have to find one from a gas engine truck '99 and up or will the diesel or older v8 transmission work too? are the back halves of the transmission cases all the same?
now what i had run into with this was the rear cv joint in the driveshaft seized up. my buddy bought the truck that way cheap becuse of it. 99 v10 f350 sc sb. 4 inch lift arb's front and rear 35inch tsl's. $2500. it was a forestry, logging, company truck. we put in a used trans. very hard to find one. we used a local junkyard locator and found one in upstate new york. $950 when we took out the driveshaft out the cv was seized tight . i put two new joints in it and there was a problem again.
i called canada wide today and it's $278 for a brand new back half case so i think i'm going to do that. all of my internals seem fine except for the synchro from 4th to 5th which i think i'll change too at $45.
i'm trying to figure out if putting in another crossmember under the transfer case might cause me problems or not. i know the the transmission moves along with the transfer case so it might cause things to torque in the wrong places and break.
