Transfer Case or Transmission?
If you are driving in 2wd and lose power to wheels is it possible the transfer case is the problem and not the transmission? This was in a 1995 Ford Explorer 4x4 automatic transmission.

Here is a quick and easy test to determine if it is the transmission or the transfer case. Will the truck roll more than a foot in park? If so, then the transfer case is the problem. If it will not roll in park then the transmission is the problem.
