ok, I have an 02 f-150 4x4 that I did the brakes, shocks, and inner and outer tie rod ends. When I was done, the truck sat higher in the front end and the caster/camber was way out. bottom of tire sits way in. Is this just and adjustment to the tie rods, or what. The old rod ends were pretty bad. Could this be the result of an allignment tech setting caster way out to account for the bad ball joints?
Shocks could have been very worn. Or taller shocks. Tie rods could have been adjusted differently to compensate for wear. Could maby go the rest of the way with ball joints and have a full alignment done and not have to worry about it for a long time.
I double checked the shock #'s. they are right, had the upper and lower balljoints done 1 year ago. I think that it must be the tie rods needing to be adjusted way out. Thanks for the info.
tie rods will push the front of the tire in or out (TOE IN). You said caster/ camber, that means the tire is tipped in or out at the top, right ? That means the truck sets higher, as you said. Probably due to shocks. AS you raise the truck the top of the tires tip outward. Just like putting a jack under the frame and raising the truck off the ground. You will need an alignment. Question is how did it get that way ? Could have been due to shocks, but normally the spring sets the height. You didnt adjust the cams higher ?
no, didn't adjust anything. just replaced the front shocks, and then put in new tie rods on both sides. I counted threads and got the new ones as close to the old length as possible without an alignment, so when I dropped the truck back down and the caster/camber was so off, I was just baffled.. I think it just needs an alignment really bad. thanks for the info.
On my 95 i had i replaced inners, and outers as well as drag link it put my caster out as well as turned my steering wheel sideways after getting threads perfectly back in line. Just one of those things.
thanks for all the info guys. I appreciate the help. I have it all fixed now, I just needed to let the shocks settle out a little and got it aligned this morning. caster/camber was way out, and so was the toe in/out......
