Fuel filter disaster
Fuel filter changed last week. Had to take the top off of the upper filter today and now can't get it to go back on without leaking (proper, blowing diesel everywhere when the key is turned). Any tips on how to get the o-ring to reseat? As I tighten, a small amount will poke out and that's the leak point.

Did you use a new o-ring?

Yes last week, no now. Can you just buy an o-ring at autozone? Also, it says 14Nm on top. I don't have a torque wrench, so is that finger tight, not pulling too hard tight, what? Last week just popped it on no problem. O-ring does seem loose.

O-ring should be pretty tight.
14nm = about 10~11 foot lbs. I snug the cap down and then give it a little nudge to tighten it. No need to be the incredible Hulk.

Should the o-ring be all the way at the top of the cap, as in it can go no higher up?

Guess I don't really pay attention, but I think the o-ring can only really go in one groove on the cap.
Is this a 7.3 or 6.0/6.4 you're working on?

6.0, I think the old ring got pinched and is loose. Got a replacement at AZ that I'm putting on now. Stay tuned.

Autozone generic o-ring worked great. No leak. For the record, the o-ring does not go all the way to the top. There is a small groove it rests in below that. Thanks for the help.

I've never use a tq wrench. Tighten it till the cap is against the aluminum. Then make it snug. Or 1/16-1/8 turn. iirc

Since my engine took a diesel bath last night, my EGTs are down about 100F. I assume this will improve as all that diesel burns off?
