Just today my ABS light came on and the AE showed DTC C1185 (ABS power relay output circuit failure). I have checked my fuses and all looks good. New batteries in truck a week ago. The manual is advising to do a few pin point tests on the EHCU. From what I can tell, it looks like I would have to remove the hydraulic control unit just to do the pin point test. Obviously that means a bit of a mess with the brake lines being disconnected. If I have to get that deep into the truck disconnecting lines and making a mess, I want to have the new part available so it will be a quick fix. Local dealerships don't have the part in stock. Tousley Ford has it at about $ 130.00 cheaper, so I'll order from them.
Can I keep driving the truck with that light on? Will it cause any issues or just problems if I have to slam on the brakes resulting in no ABS? Anyone have any tips or suggestions for replacing the module? Searching FTE and google didn't yield any tips, pointers, etc.

I know this post was a long time ago, but I just had the ABS light come on and throw the same dtc c1185. Trying to figure out what's going on before I start pulling off parts.

I still haven't fixed it. For me the code is intermittent. I'll clear it and it will come back up sometimes within a week other times months later. It has a mind of its own, comes and goes. Driving me crazy. The light is predominant in hot weather. Sorry I am not much help. The way the abs module is situated I didn't want to just yank it out and make a mess, so I haven't taken it out yet.
The reason I ask about the hubs is because I spoke to a fellow 6.0 owner at work lastnight and he said to use a jack and lift the front tires off of the ground about an inch. Grab the tire with one hand on top and one on bottom, push the top of the tire in toward the truck and pull the bottom out away from the truck at the same time, back and forth. If there's play, the hub bearings are shot and will need to be replaced.
If you can reach them, try disconnecting and reconnecting all wiring harnesses at the ABS module. After years, temperature creep can give you an intermittent connection there that a simple re-seat can clear up.
My hubs seems ok, no play. I'll try to disconnect the connectors and see if that helps. Its pretty tight up in that section, but Ill try. Thanks for the advice.
I've got the same problem with my Excursion and it's also only when it's warm outside. It's RWD, so no hubs to check. Did reseating your connectors resolve it for you?
Not sure why this old post keeps staying in this forum or why anyone would be checking hubs when the code is a power issue.
This is the check from the service manual.
The problem with the service manual instructions is it doesn't take into account any intermittent power supply issue, such as a pinched wire in the harness, a faulty connection at the relay/fuse or a relay with a momentary faulty contact. Flipping relays and checking connections along with moving the harness around is the best way to find the issue before paying big dollars for the ABS unit.
TooManyToys, thanks for posting the diagnostic flow chart. According to it, this truck needs a new ABS control module.
Weird, that last week, did a bunch of other work to it, and had no problems with ABS, then after driver took it home for tyhe weekend, light came on. Been turning wrenches long enough to know, anything is possible.
Going to order the part and will post the results, when finished.
