tow question?

this was only the second thing i towed with my 01 so far the total for trailer and coal was 11k.going up some the hills it seemed to lug and lose speed. i think my max rpm was 2500.i towed my 30ft. layton earlier this year but the mountain was no where as steep as the hills coming back from trevorton.should i be into the throttle alot more this weight and turning higher rpms? i know to someone who tows alot with a diesel this is probably a stupid question but this my first diesel.
thanks for any tips.

If you are losing speed press the go pedal further. That's why it moves more.

Yeah, in these trucks, especially stock, just give it whatever it takes you wont hurt anything.

Give us some info, where are you towing, what gear are you in, how steep is the grade? There are a lot of factors involved that we don't have info in to make a good assessment. I tow the hell out of my 14k lb 5th wheel, but the hills I deal with on the east coast may be different than what you are pulling.

i always had gassers and my last 5.4 towing and hauling seen 4,200rpms alot!

You should be looking for whatever RPM it takes to get up the grade. The PCM will not let the engine overspeed. You can put your right foot on the floor and hold it there.

Truth is 11k lbs is no joke, so I want to give you the best info I can. The engine will be fine, its the trans that may start to feel the struggle if you are running at low speeds and high rpm. I would kick it out of OD unless you are cruising at freeway speeds for a long time. If you do that you should be fine for any situation with that load.

If you find a little extra cash sometime, here is what you need to do.

you need about $1000 for everything.

1st = 6637 air cleaner. dump the stock box. about $70 with a pre-rap.
there are other air intakes out there also

2nd = gauges. you can get a Glow shift 3 gauge kit for under $300
pyro ( exhaust temp), trans temp, boost. other brands are good also for a little more

3rd = 4 inch turbo back exhaust. #sp6200 to your door $304 Bust buy IMO..

4th = a tuner with a 60 hp tow program, 60 econo, 80 econo and de-cell for towing down hill. Around $426 and up depending on what you want.
If you like towing different things or want a little better all around performance. i would get a tuner like PHP or DP tuner.
Not a canned tuner you can buy a auto part stores

You will not believe it's the same truck. Ask anyone like me on here that thought Ya right.. You may get 1 to 2 more mpg but the power gain is well worth it.

When I tow a heavy load up a grade that is so steep as to lug the engine then I manually downshift to get my RPMs up to the 2500-2600 range. I don't like to leave it in drive and mash the pedal because the downshift feels very harsh that way. Sometimes I can get away with just turning off OD and cruising up the hill in 3rd gear (at 2500 rpm). Other times, if the grade is very steep or I am very heavy, I have to manually pull down to 2nd gear (around 40 mph) and then slowly increase the mph to maintain 2600 rpm and just cruise up the rest of the way. Once I get to the top, I put it back in D and turn off OD light (unless I need the lower gear for a descent).

When towing up a grade, it's better to downshift and take advantage of higher RPMs vs leaving it in a higher gear and lugging the engine. If you were to install an EGT gauge, then you'd see that lugging the engine causes very high exhaust temps by comparison.

Good question.

I just think that in stock form his EGTs are not going to be an issue. This is coming from someone who towed with gauges and no other mods for a while.

I would just be worried about the tranny. May have Ben a coincidence but mine went out while pulling my dump trailer.

I blew up my tranny in stock configuration by towing wrong. Get the speed up to TQLU and you'll go further than a few miles. Other than that, if you're going to haul heavy on hills on a regular basis - modify the transmission or save up for a...
