I have DP Tuner and am quite happy with it in my '99 PSD. My brother has a 2003 7.3 and he would like to get one also. I have not been on this forum for a couple of years and don't know if there are any other Tuners out there that he should look at along with DP.
One other question is, do these have to be reprogrammed once is a while, or are they pretty well maintenance free?
Depending on how long ago you got your tunes, as far as I know, Jody has updated his tunes along the way. Where do you live? I run DP as well but have heard many good things about other tuners as well. Brian at BTS, especially if you have one, or plan on getting one of his transmissions. Tony Wildman, Beans, etc... Do your research, find what works best for you. I'm sure many others will weigh in with their $.02 as well.
I read Tony Wildman, BTS, and Beans - I'll add PHP to the list, plus there are many "shade tree" programmers with Minotaur software that program the widely-used TS chip. Many pros used to reprogram competetor's TS chips, but few still do that.
DP is like Apple, it's proprietory hardware and it's capable of something more than the TS because of it. I don't know what the secret ingredient is, maybe somebody else does.
If I had compared chips on my truck with my AE, I'd have a recommendation and a "why" - but I don't.
I strongly recommend getting the type of chip that can link with a laptop. Change of shifts, upgrade injectors or the transmission, move to a mountainous area, buy a towed toy, add the latest tune, etc.... These are all good reasons to reflash the chip, so wouldn't it be nice to just order it online and get the new tune in the email in hours? What if you want to change the sequence of the tunes to make switching more convenient for how you use them?
Thanks for all the replies and good info. I will forward to my brother.
I live in Arizona and I believe it has been about 4 years since I installed the DP Tuner tuned for 80hp towing (if I remember right). Did not get the F5 switch as I mostly use the truck for towing. Gas mileage and performance is good with a 30' toybox, but not as good a mileage as it used to be with the Diablo Sport unhitched. If I were to drive it more without the trailer, I would invest in the F5 and more tunes, but makes no sense at this time.

I hope their not like Apple.....Over priced, over rated, and doesn't work well with others. It would only drive me away from them!

Haha this is great! All the tunes out there are great, whatever works for you might not work for the next guy....all you can do is ask questions and tell them what you want and see if they can do it.

I would STRONGLY suggest you get your tunes updated. Unless of course you like the death rattle your truck has now...
I would suggest any tuner running a TS style chip.

Have you run ANY other tuner to base your wide ranging and completely uneducated opinion?
Dp's special chip is nothing more then a special chip... Expensive, not compatible with anyone else and once you have it, your locked to there tuning...
You dont need to change tunes if you have a tuner that can write a tune that doesnt give you 80% of the TPS at 30%...
I run one tune 95% of the time, as I have said before... So does my wife in her Excursion...
Get a good tuner, with good tunes and you will forget where the "switcher" is.

The hardware DP tuner uses is not special. There is no secret ingredient. If you buy a TS chip and look at the **** it is actually a 12 position ****, with physical lock in place at the 6th position.
Both chips have memory chips in them, which is where the tunes are stored. Because of differences in the file formats and memory chips, the DP Tuner can store more data than the TS chip. That is the ONLY difference. More memory. Plain and simple. Could this be the reason DP tuner decided to make their own chip? So they could be different than everyone else and offer more tunes? Possibly. But as a result no one else can add tunes to the DP tuner because no one else has access to the proprietary file type.
Also, there is the small bit about DP tuners reacting poorly to RF interference.. But thats a tale for another day.
I ran DP toons in my truck and they were ok, but when following another member in my truck he could hear my engine rattling over his own truck when we were both in our trucks with them running at a stop light me behind him. Granted I've had the DP toons since 2009 or 2010 and have never had them updated.
I've heard nothing but good about tunes from Brian at BTS and I've heard very little bad about tunes from Matt at Gearhead.
If I recall correctly Matt offers free reburns for as long as you have the chip so if you get new injectors he'll change that for free whereas I believe Jody charges for that service.
