How to remove window regulator

I am trying to replace the window regulator in my 1985 F150. They are not power windows.

The problem I'm having is their are three things holding the regulator to the door, which I have never seen before and I'm not sure what it takes to remove them. They look like the end of a screw with a washer type thing around it. On the inside of the door is metal that is frayed out in three directions.

Please let me know if their is a step by step guide on here already and If not then please help.

Thanks,
Aubrey

I think you mean rivets? I've ground some off before, then used nuts & bolts.

They don't look like any rivets I've ever seen. But maybe your right.

Yes, they are rivets, they use a steel shank in the middle. Sometimes you can take a punch and knock the center into the door to make drilling easier. They are made to spread on the backside for more holding power. Use a 1/4" drill bit to remove or grind the head off. Then just use 1/4" bolts 3/4" long to re-install the new regulator.

paintinpevs91,

Use the "search" feature and type in: Replacing window regulator.

I went through this dated 10/13/11 and it is not difficult. I used the nylon lined locking nuts.

Amazon sells the rivets here

Why rivets? Convenience on the assembly line? No worries about them loosening?

Speed of assembly on the assembly line. Same reason they use those quick-connect fuel hoses instead of hose clamps.

Makes total sense for assembly line but a pain for one of us to replace...

I appreciate all the help. When my father owned the truck the place where the window handle screws into on the actuator got stripped badly and so when I purchased new handles the one would not screw on...

Yeah. Luckily, this isn't the kind of thing that's regularly serviced. If it were, I would expect them to have used different fasteners.

Yes, those screws can be stripped easily, they're a real fine thread. If it seems "too hard" to turn it, back it out and try again, it's probably cross-threaded.

Chris: Scan and post this: Illustration Section 200, Page 13.

Notice basic number 23240 .. This is the nylon window roller, a notorious POS, fits to end of regulator arm, then into the window channel the glass fits to.

When it cracks apart, the window falls down into the door. So, if this is what's occurring, it's not the fault of the regulator...so it doesn't need to be replaced.

And, you don't need to R&R the regulator to replace the little charmer, so you don't have to mess with rivets.

D6AZ-5323240-A (replaced D2OZ-5323240-A) .. Window Roller / Available from Ford.

Applications: Myriad 1972/2001 FoMoCo vehicles, available from any autoparts store.
