84 F150, 351W HO. I replaced the fuel pump, plugs, wires, distributor cap.
Problem is, when cold or hot it's having bad hard start issues. When cold, takes about 45 seconds of cranking to get started. When hot, takes about 15-20.
Truck is getting fuel, definitely. When it starts, it runs fine. Idles fine. Just getting it started is the hard part.
Also has a slight miss at idle only. Clears up with any throttle.
And has, over the past month, gotten a habit of randomly shutting off while driving.
I'm not quite sure what it's deal is. But you all have been good at pointing me in the right direction. Any help is appreciated, as always!
I kinda doubt the shutting-off is related to the hard starting but of course I have no way to know for sure.
Can you more explain this "shutting off?" Do the lights & radio & accessories still work but the engine stops running? Does it just stop as if the key were shut off? Or, does it sputter and die like it ran out of gas?
One thing that could cause both problems is the ignition module, you might take it to a parts store and have it tested.
Get your ignition module tested, taje it to a parts store to do that (ideally, one that can simulate a hot condition since they more often fail with heat).
And we checked it just a bit ago. Zero spark. So I'm going to look into a new ignition module.
Sounds good. If the module tests good, have them retest it 3-5 times. Sometimes they test good, until they heat up.
If it still tests good, check out the coil.
There is also the pickup thinger inside the distributor that could be causing a problem. The thinger instructs the module to fire the coil at the right times.

Would have been my next suggestion, if the coil checked out. It's easier to check/change the coil VS the pickup......

Yeppers! I tried to change the PIP thinger once, even had a brand-new Motorcraft unit as a replacement. Busted the drive gear getting it off, then cracked the center shaft trying to get it out of the housing. Finally purchased a NOS FoMoCo replacement distributor from eBay after the Cardone reman unit I purchased online was the wrong one for my application. Correct part number on box, wrong part inside.
