I am in the process of putting a 5.0 HO from a T-bird in my '71 shortbed. Engine has approx 100 k on it, p.o. claims to have went through it once before.
I pulled the stock injectors to clean and noticed that one is chipped at the end that plugs into the intake manifold. Does not seem to be something I did when removing, as chipped injector end is not clean or "fresh" looking.
I plan on replacing the chipped injector. Other injectors show no obvious signs of damage. No chips, cracks, torn O-rings, etc. Do injectors have a life span? Is there a way to test or measure their condition, either before or after cleaning? Or should I bite the bullet and replace the other 7 injectors as well?
Unless the chip seems to likely be causing an injector malfunction, I would keep it. It is more likely to match the others for flow than a new replacement. Does its spark plug look similar to the others?
Fuel injectors can be tested by supplying them with pressurized fuel and an electrical hookup. Here's a pretty good article about it:
Generally a visual inspection of spray pattern is sufficient. The spray should be just that, a conical spray. Clogged or faulty injectors will have a bad spray pattern such as a single stream or dripping or just about anything else. They don't really have a lifespan, because even if they wear a little from long use, the computer will alter the signal to them to compensate.
If the injector O-rings are hardened, I would replace them.
Low mile used injectors are cheap. Since all 5.0's used 19lb injectors most guys modifying their engine tend to up grade to 24lb or 30 lb injectors, you can pick up a complete set for well under $100. I bought a set for $50!
Visit a Mustang performance web site and check the classifieds for postings. Of you can visit a pick-n-pull and pick up a few. They are not hard to remove. Just get one that are the same color.
Chip was on the pintel cap. Broke another pintel removing the O-Rings. Decided to get a rebuilt set off ebay. they have a one year warranty, plus I can keep my old ones for spares.
