fuel injector problem

I was taking my injectors out and when I removed the number one injector the gasket and the red boot around the actual injector itself remained in the manifold. Anybody know of a way to get it out without causing any damage? The o-rings where the injectors fit into the fuel rail came off as well, but those I can get out easy enough and they were getting replaced anyhow. I really don't want to buy new injectors. Also, is there a way to flow test the injectors to know whether or not they need to be replaced? Thanks!

The only way I can think to get it out is to use a REALLY sharp blade and cut a slit in the gasket, then grab it with some neddle nose pliars and try to peel it off. Be sure NOT to let it fall into the engine, try stuffing a rag or something in there first!

As for testing injectors, any reputable place like Pep-boys, Midas etc..... will have a machine that cleans the injectors by squirting a solution through it and that same machine also tests them for flow. I think it's like $3-$5 an injector!!

Good idea about slitting it. I was thinking maybe with a really sharp scribe I could pull it out. I'd like to reuse it if possible. Any idea if I can but a single injector or do they only come as a package?

Fuel injectors are sold seperately. So yes, you can only buy one!

NAPA quoted me $44 apiece recently. For an 86 302.

Not too bad if you only need one, but the total adds up pretty quick at that price. I think I'll try to get 8 used ones. thanks! --Eric

You can buy individual injectors, but if it's just the plastic cap on the end that you need, it's called the pintle cap. Napa sells them for something like $0.40/each. I broke one of mine a while back when I pulled the injectors so I decided to replace all of them while I had the rail out.

If Napa can't find the pintle cap for you, reply to this thread and I'll dig out my old receipts and get you the part number. They're a pretty Ford blue as opposed to the orange/red original ones anyway.

Thanks, that's good news! I was just getting ready to bid on some used ones on ebay. I didn't know you could replace just the "pintle cap". I didn't even know what a pintle cap was. I think tomorrow I'll take them somewhere to be cleaned and flow tested. I love this board. Thanks for the help! --Eric

2-15018 is Napa's part number for the pintle caps. I paid $0.39/each for them. From what I've seen, they fit a wide variety of injectors.

You can get replacement take-outs from a site called http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/ for a heck of a lot cheaper than what you find at any auto part store. I do know they are of great quality because I have a set in my truck right now.

If you are really in a bind I could send you my old ones but I dont know which two of the 8 are bad. And I dont know how long they will last.

Thanks Frogger, I only saw your response today. I wound up putting the old ones back in after cleaning them myself. I think it should work just fine. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have it put together and running. I saw the ones from fiveomotorsports and actually thought about getting some, so when the time comes......anyway, that was a generous offer and I appreciate it. take care, --Eric
