Stroker Project

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1996 351w, F150. It's an auto, geared with a beefier rear-end. Previous owner used the truck for pulling and put a stouter tranny/rear-end/shaft and geared it. The plate is missing, and I haven't removed the cover, but drives/feels like 4.?s. Prev owners also rebuilt the engine about 40k ago, and it's stout with no leaks or issues.

My question, the truck is my third vehicle, and I love playing around in it, but now I want to build it as I will have a garage for the project soon. Since I am new to stroker kits, what would be a good, $3k (not counting tread) and under kit for my truck?

I want to go no smaller than a 408, but no larger than a 418. I prefer the 418 since it creates more bottom end, and with it being a truck, I'd rather have bottom than top.

Any pointers, and/or product list would be much appreciated. Also, guides would be very much appreciated. I am new to strokers, but know my way around ford engines.

Thanks,

Patrick H.

Welcome to FTE!

There are some stroker threads here already, just scroll through this forum.

Generally, if you leave all else the same, the power band will go down the rpm range.

If you leave the displacement the same, and fiddle with everything else, the power peak goes up to a higher rpm.

But, the stroker kits are going to have pistons too, so your CR will probably change, and you may change other things as well. Once you are in the 400 cube area, unless you go nuts with a cam, you are looking at a pretty broad power curve methinks.

For $2000, you can get:

10672-DM-F408W - Ford 408W Flat Top -4.0cc Dominator Engine Kit

To get the most out of it, you might need heads, or maybe just a cam and springs etc. You have some budget left to fiddle with, and you can find more serving suggestions for strokers with a simple search for "ford 408 stroker" or similar.

I don't see the stroker kit itself costing more than about $1k but that's good because the motor will also need a set of heads, an intake, bigger injectors, a fuel pump, and a tuner to make it all cooperate, so you're still gonna have problems keeping it under $3k but I think you can get close.

Thanks for the tips and replies. My 96 will need a tuner with a stroker kit? I haven't heard that before.

Well yeah.. you're gonna double the amount of air moving through the engine if you build even a half decent stroker so there's no way the computer can self adjust to that.

What about the 393 build using 302 piston heads and stock rods? Is this a good build and what all would be needed?
