Need some help here, I've got a 1970 F100 w/302. Looking at upgrading the motor. Looking at a 400 (6.6L) from a 1978 F150. Will this work and what problems am I looking at if it will. Or would it just be better to go with a 390 from a 68-76? Or what would be the best fit? Thanks for the info.
If you're upgrading I'd stick with a small block, like a 351, lots of mods you can do to get them powerful enough and still easy to find parts for. The FE engines are a little more of a hassle. Atleast in my experience. And the parts are also a little more too. But there is always the 460 too which is a Big Block. Just my two cents, but I'm sure others with more knowledge on the subject will chime in.
The 400 will go in with little problem. Just get the motor mounts complete from the donor truck. In fact would work best if you have the entire donor until you are finished.
I agree with Mikes and Rogue. After returning my truck back to an FE (with trans and driveline) from a 429, I'd go with a 351W any day. Find a 351w that will mount to your existing trans and beef it up.
I agree with the Windsor.Much better engine and has more torque than the 302.It's also cheaper for parts than the FE or the M-series engines.Plus as stated it'll bolt up to your existing drivetrain. That's a HUGE benefit.Just be sure to get the 351w flexplate.
It seems like most of the 302 headers don't seem to fit the 351. That's just what I read on the forums, not personal experience. As of a year or two ago, nobody made headers to put a 351W into a bumpside chassis.
