Got to change my sig. today. Last week end I installed the 38R I posted the pics of last week. Not a bad job, considering I had to blast the exh. housing and ceramic coat it to match the turbo. Total time was 7hrs including lunch. Took my time, torqued everything like garrett says to. Also had to remove a little material (1/8in.) from the spider where it mates to the plenums because of the inserts. Not a big deal, but just another thing to do when modding something. bottom line is it runs good. boost is set at a little over 30psi, I'm going to lower that a little though. Can't wait for the live tune at RRE.
With the bushings in the GTP38 you do run a higher percentage chance of "working it" a little too hard. With the bearings in the 38R it is more suitable to run the higher boost pressures. The 38R is capable of boost numbers above 30 and up to 40 (ish) from what I have heard.
As with anything, short stints at higher boost is not going to kill a GTP38. The 38R is a great upgrade to lower EGT's, increase boost, longevity and is completely drop in.
There are better turbo's out there, but they almost all require more in depth modifications to mount up! For most the 38R is a great turbo to go with. Clay has them for a great price now too. $1299 is a great price for this turbo and will surely go up again.
Ken thanks for the reply, Maybe tugly was refering to the turbo. I was saying "conservative" in respect to the engine. I'm sure it can take more, but I don't race or even tow heavy so I don't need it. Although I guess I could just control it with my right foot. I don't know, what do you think?
I went through a bout of testing all my tunes, and it involves WOT tests with the AE monitoring a bunch of stuff. I ran so many WOT tests that I'm actually tired of hammer-down. My most recent fixes and mods got me over 30 PSI boost and that's where I paused to build my coffers back up.
I've heard the engine can take 45 PSI boost without any ill effects on the life of the engine, head gaskets, forged rods (for those that have them), etc.... I don't recall where I heard it or how accurate it is. As for the turbo, I suspected I was redlining the GTP38, but I rarely get that far into it now.
I think I'll leave it for now. It will be live tuned by DP at RRE. It takes 5 min. to tighten or loosen the actuator rod. I don't stomp on it anyway. Thanks for the input though.
