Big Power?

when i get the truck off pops, i want to add some more goodies.
like 4 or 5 inch straight pipe exhaust, bigger injectors, better tuning, so on and so forth..

that being said, whats the Ballpark HP/TQ numbers i could see..

my goal would be 400rwhp, but if it does more, that'd be fine by me..

i know that what i said could be in a wide range depending on what exact parts and stuff i end up using. so whats the border line number thats hard to get a 7.3 past without BIG BUCKS being thrown into it.

Intake: $100-350
Exhaust: $350-600
Gauges: $490
Chip With Tunes: $450
HPOP: $450
Transmission (Auto) $4800 (to handle the added power next on the list)
Injectors: $1200-1400
Turbo: $1500

The first 3 items should be purchased before anything else. Any order on them is fine.

The First 4 items will wake the truck up and make it feel completely different. Once you get to that point decide what path you want to take from that point is. A transmission (if auto) is going to be needed to run higher HP numbers. They simply were not designed in stock form to handle the added power and torque.

That should get you right at 400 RWHP. Are you really caring about HP or feel? Have you driven a diesel that has been modified? The torque is amazing on these and is really the "Sell" when a non oil burner owner drives one.

yea we already built our own exhaust, built the tranny, programmed and what not, and it already "goes" good. but i know that i can get more, i just want to know how MUCH more. i have driven it, and like it alot. it will pull anything at anyspeed, i just want it to do it faster, cuz i know it can.

my estimates are 320hp and 700lb-ft as it sits.

  1. Make absolutely certain the engine is 100% with no pre-turbo exhaust leaks or bad sensors.
  2. Get a bigger intake. 6637 and Ford AIS are very popular - the former whistles (in the front) a lot, the latter is a quiet intake.
  3. 4" pretty much covers it into the 400 HP range - get at least that. There is a grand debate on the alleged benfits of 5" when going over 400 HP - 5" just sounds wrong to many (myself included), but I hold a personal opinion that 5" is not overkill for letting big power breathe.
  4. Gauge up! If you're going to let the monster out to play, you need to know when it breaks a sweat.
  5. Tune up! Forget the Superchips/Bully Dog canned tunes - go custom with one of the many options from professional programmers. You'll see a lot of DP Tuner and PHP in signatures here.
  6. Hang on for dear life before you decide if step 7 is needed because there be dragons sniffin' for your wallet after this.

yea i just need trans and egt guages, big intake, big injectors, and turbo really. custom tunes are definate. i know my way around the 7.3.

im not going to blow thousands and thousands trying to get it higher, just going to do the things already mentioned. im willing to spend a little. couple thousand or so.
we built our 3-1/2" exhaust for 20 bucks. so i can buy some 4 or 5 inch tubing and do it again the same way.
plus an 05-07 front end with billet grille inserts and big hood scoops.(its gotta look cool)

Yeah, but with injectors at $2k, a turbo at $1.5k & tuning at $500, you're already looking at $4k. Probably closer to $5k by the time you've added gauges & intake & stuff.

Also, it depends what year 7.3L PSD you have. The early 7.3L PSDs have forged rods, whereas the later 7.3L PSDs have powder metal rods (PMRs) which aren't as strong. 400whp should be okay on PMRs though, and most tuners' tunes have been optimized for PMR setups too.

You cant just say injectors turbo and tuning. There are tons of sizes and such to consider. What is the ultimate use of the truck? There is a lot to factor in. Today's 7.3 trucks can be pushed to the 550 range and still be streetable. Supporting mods need to come first depending on your parts choice.
