Steering boxes are removed and adjusted on a workbench as an inch/lb wrench is needed for checking preloads without steering linkage hooked up. More than likely if the box needs adjustment it's worn out in my opinion.
You sure you don't have worn steering linkage, column shaft or column u-joint?
Have someone turn strg wheel l-r, r-l slightly while you look at strg linkage for side play and up down movement of idler arms and ball ends.
