I have a 97 F150 4.6L 4x4 5 speed. I ran diagnostics on it and it told me that number 3 and 8 cylinder misfired , it also said both banks were running lean and poor exhaust recirculation but i figur thats due to my exhaust being cut off from relacing the transmission but anyways i replaced both coil packs and the number 8 cylinder is fixed but cylinder three was still missing. I changed the plugs and drove for about 300 miles and pulled the plug and theres a thick black build up almost like rubber or silicone on it. Ive never encountered this before and have asked numerous people and cant get a answer. Anybody got any ideas.
Hi Rodney, You gave alot of info but ran it all togather.
First we need the codes, not your intepetation of them from your reader because they are often missunderstood.
I understand one will be a P0303.
But give the rest so none are missed.
We need to hear/see the exact EGR code because there is more than one code for EGR operational testing.
Good luck.
Code 171/174 usually is an intake tract air leak some point after the mass air meter.
Look for deteriorated rubber fitting/ connections.
303 cylinder 3 missfire.
Recheck the boot and wire to the plug and be sure you have the fire order correct when replacing the wires.
Coil faulty.
404 is the EGR performance margin.
This code seldom comes up as a normal fault.
If you have open exhaust or some incomplete exhaust at some point, restore it to normal.
The EGR tests and operation depends on exhaust pressure to force some through the tube and into the intake through the open EGR through a port in the intake. Make sure it's all in tact and the port behind the EGR is open.
The sensor DPFE measures this performance and is the source of the code.
The DPFE could also be faulty if the rest of the hardware is in tact and open.
You should be able to clear all these faults by doing quality work and observations.
Good luck.
