Steering column/shifter problems

Thanks, Number Dummy, for the clarification. I feel more confident now to re-assemble this. Can you confirm that part number 354590-S is a washer, and could you give me the name of part number 7A347?
Does the designation (-S) after a part number mean that it is a standard piece of hardware, such as a screw, washer, nut, bolt, etc.?

C0DF-7A347-A = See 7A347 in pic at right.

S = Standard aka hardware part number. When shown in illustrations, may not have the complete suffix. All end in S, some have additional numbers afterwards.

These numbers can be easy, or very difficult to find in the text section of parts catalogs. There's also the Standard Parts Catalogs, but I haven't been able to find one that reflects the 1960's.

I do have one, but it was printed in 2000. Many of the older than 1970 part numbers aren't listed.

354590-S7-8 .. Washer - 33/64" O.D. x 5/16" I.D. x 1/32" thick-special. (XX102) is the bin location. Standard parts bins have pull out drawers with a gazillion cubby holes in them.

Pic at left: Notice this washer is listed under the 7293 spring.

I am learning more than I asked for and probably more than I need to know, given that I likely will never again see the inside of a Ford steering column – but if I do, I will be better prepared.

Let me see if I understand –let me know if any of the statements below are not correct:
The word “Standard’ refers to hardware items, so, for example , a “Standard Parts Catalog” lists only hardware items (screws, washers, bolts, etc.), not specific parts (water pump, spark plug).
“pic at right” refers to the second parts chart that appears underneath your narrative in your reply
“Pic at left” refers to the first chart
Ford parts departments have lotsa bins for small hardware pieces and are coded to be easy to find
The two attachments (pics?) are pages from “the text section of parts catalogs”

Two related Questions: It is not urgent that I know this, but I am curious.
1. Are the pages of “Ford Truck Parts”, like the two you attached, the only way to look up the names of specific parts? Or are there pages that list just part numbers and the names of those parts?
2. Mine is a 1972 – would the parts listed be the same, given that the exploded view of parts shown in Illustration section 35 shows “1965 – 1972”?

Changing subjects, in another thread, you wrote that inserting a new NSS selector lever is “easy”. Given its location under the dash, inside the steering column attached to the shift tube, and with a support bar just above the column, do you have any advice that might help me insert it?
I plan to lubricate the new one and the tube, and, while I have it all apart, practice putting it in while the tube is outside the column. Wish me luck getting it in after the shift tube is inside the column.

This catalog is required to "look up" all parts for trucks, which includes Econolines.

Well, I "got 'er done". Special thanks to Number Dummy, Orich, Jafffafa, and Sandman for your advice. Everything now works well. Interesting, isn't it, how we take for granted the ability to shift gears.

Number Dummy: This is a long shot - Do you by any chance know of a General Motors equivalent with your expertise and experience? I ask because I am looking for a manual master cylinder for a 1960 Oldsmobile. I know that one of the '57 Chevy MC's is an exact fit. I want to have the part number and be sure before ordering it.This will be cheaper that buying the one for the Olds.

As an addition to this thread, if you have a manual steering column for an automatic transmission;

Prior to my ownership of my truck, the previous owner had an incident where the gear selector lever fell out of park and into reverse --this was while the truck was running and no one sitting in the truck.

It took off in reverse, across the yard, and slammed into a tree. This is the reason why that happened. --a very worn pawl on the tip of the automatic transmission gear selector lever.

If you have an automatic and the gear selector lever is showing signs of wear, I would advise to change this part out soon.
