The horn pad is the same 1971/77 F100/350 & 1974/77 Bronco, but there are two different types. Both are reproduced by Carpenter.

Black camera case finish (except Ranger XLT) / Walnut wood grain finish (Ranger XLT only).

I would put in a new switch just so you won't have the new buyer comming back to you later when the whole thing fails. Also when reinstalling the wires thru the column, coat the wires with a grease lubricant...it will make it slide in much easier.

You are an invaluable help to these forums. I just discovered that the new shifter cups do not come with that little “pointer” thing to show what gear it is in. I was told it is a separate part and was given a part number F5TZ-7B033A (is that an 0 number, or an o letter?). My broken cup appears to have the pointer as an integral part of its body. Can you tell if this part is available anywhere?

“Orich” I am just today seeing your pictures of the green Lisle tool. Maybe I missed it previously. The company told me that the older ones were green and that the new stock are grey. I bought a grey one. Perhaps they slightly enlarged the new one.

The original 1967/72 shift collar came with the pointer made as part of it.

The replacement collar has a slot in it for its plastic shift dial pointer to slip into.

D5TZ-7228-A (replaced C5TZ-7228-A & B - C9TZ-7228-A - D3TZ-7228-A) .. A/T Shift Collar Kit-Includes D3TZ-7A110-A Shift Dial Pointer.

Applications: 1965/77 F100/350 / 1973/77 Bronco & Econoline.

As Bill stated above the Genuine Ford D5TZ7228A "comes with" the pointer. Did you get a Genuine Ford one or aftermarket?

I am in the process of replacing the shifter bowl on the steering column. The inner part of the old shifter bowl (part # 7228) cracked and then broke, making it impossible to shift gears with the shifter handle. I have removed all of the parts.
I purchased the following parts:
Shifter bowl – aftermarket
Shift indicator - NOS
Turn signal switch – aftermarket

Inside the shifter bowl is an assembly consisting of about six parts (two springs – one fits inside the other, a pin, a washer, a thing sorta like a washer, a copper contact with a spring and wire attached, and two screws that hold the assembly in place along the side). The purpose seems to be to allow the (Horn?) to be grounded while the steering wheel is turning. Each end is spring loaded to keep pressure on the ends. Since the shifter bowl does not come with this “spring set “, I unscrewed and removed those (six?) parts from the old bowl. That was about 4 weeks ago and I did not sufficiently memorize exactly how that it all goes back together. The main thing I need to know is the order in which these parts go into that area, and from which side they go in.
So I have some questions:
For Bill / Retired Ford Parts Manager / Part number research
1. What is the proper name for part number 7228 that I call the “shifter bowl”?
2. I am looking at Ford truck Parts Illustration 35. Is there a sheet which gives the names for all of the parts shown?
3. Could the parts above #7228 on the page be the parts I am referring to above?
4. In the process of removing everything, I broke the gizmo off that clips on to the shift tube down below to activate the neutral safety switch when the tube is turned to shift gears. I cannot locate it on the diagram. Any suggestions where to get one?

For Orich or anyone else who may have instructions or knows how to assemble just this one part.
1. In what order are these parts re-assembled?
2. Does the copper piece with the wire and spring attached go in from the inside ( the upper side), or from the outside (lower end) of the bowl?
3. How do I keep that copper part from falling down into the shaft while maneuvering the new shifter bowl on?

i sad a simular issue you had to jiggle it to start it. so i took a some 3/8 clear tubing and put it over the nub that strikes the safty switch and she starts with out issue.

Ford calls the 7228 a Transmission shift lever socket. AKA shift collar,shift collar housing.
The "gizmo" you reference is part number DOTZ7B097B. There has been other threads talking about this recently. Use the SEARCH engine above and you'll find 'em.

Gees pics would sure help. I only messed with the the non shift lever as mind is a floor shifter.
But, I remember using some black electrical tape to hold the 2 side bolts in place while installing the blinker housing. As those are a real B~itch to have them stay in place while lowering it in place.
Sorry that's one of the things, I last messed with was about 25 yrs ago so kind of fuzzy remembering it all.

Steering column/shifter problems

Well my apologies to ORICH and anyone else who struggled to understand what I was asking. I think I solved that. I was trying to insert too many parts into the transmission shift lever socket (aka shift collar, shift collar housing). It finally dawned on me that the spring loaded wire and copper piece goes elsewhere, not here. Truth be told, I am not positive I have those five parts in there in the correct order. I am now working on replacing the pointer that activates the neutral safety switch (NSS). I accidentally broke it when I took out the shift tube. After I replace that and put the tube back in, I should be ready to put it all back together. Wish me luck.

I have an extra shift lever collar complete but it's for a floor shift so not much help trying to figure yours out how it goes back together.

I see it there in the lower right corner of the diagram above the sign “automatic trans.”.
Perhaps you could assist me with another part. In the upper left corner just to the left of “automatic trans.” is part number 7228, the transmission shift lever socket aka shift collar, shift collar housing (see, I take note of what you write in your responses). Inside this part, on the upper side, there are five other parts held in by two little screws. I assume this spring loaded insert is there so that after the shift lever is pulled back toward the driver to put the transmission in “park”, the lever will be pushed back into its “normal” position.
About a month ago, when I removed my broken shift collar, I took these little parts out so that I could insert them into the replacement shift collar. Unfortunately, I did not pay close enough attention to the order in which they are inserted. What I know is that the little baggie that I put those parts into upon removal has five parts plus two screws. I am listing here a description of the parts and my guess as to the part numbers based on what I see in the parts diagram.
1. thick spring - 7293
2. thinner spring that fits inside the thick spring - 7871
3. rod or pin with a cap - 7361
4. something like a not shiny cup washer – 7A347 (am I reading that correctly?)
5. shiny washer – 354590-S(XX.102.
My question is: What is the correct order of these parts?
I decided to insert the parts in the order shown (It does not matter in which order 1 and 2 are inserted, as one fits within the other).The top of the rod/pin is what has to stick out of the hole to engage the shift lever. I inserted the thin end of the rod/pin into the springs. Over the top of the rod/pin I put the cup washer, as it seems to fit there. Over that I put the shiny washer because it seems to fit there. The assembly is held in place under tension by two small screws which are on each side of the assembly. The screw heads just barely engage the assembly with the edges of the screw heads. One of the things that makes me wonder if I might have the shiny washer out of place is that when I practiced inserting the shift handle into the shift collar (a task I will have to perform upon final assembly), the washer slipped off from underneath the screw heads (they were tight). If I put the washer elsewhere, I wonder if the thin margins of the screw heads will be sufficient to hold the assembly in. Now that I have put a lot of thought into this and seeing the diagram, I suspect the washer goes on top of the springs.
Short question, long explanation, no?
