Tranny fluid change

Am wanting to change trans oil and wondering does it matter if oil is SP or the other? LV? Also how many quarts with drain and external filter change?

8 quarts to drain the pan.

8-9 quarts of you drop the pan.

The external filter holds very little - maybe a few cups.

Mercon SP or LV.

I have read about folks successfully using Valvoline MaxLife. This product says that it is Mercon SP and LV compatible.

You can actually mix the 2 fluids.

If you use something other than SP or LV, you should do a full heated flush so you aren't mixing different fluids. Only about half the fluid comes out when you just drain and refill.

If you still have a warranty stay with the sp or lv. The external filter takes app. 8 oz.

If you use a fluid that doesn't have a MERCON SP or LV rating also plan on replacing the transmission. This transmission is VERY sensitive to the right fluid.

Valvoline Maxlife specifically says that it is appropriate for SP systems. Personally I do not like the idea of seal conditioners, but folks are using it.

Even though I know of a person that has used a Royal Purple transmission fluid for 3+ years and has had ZERO issues, I am retracting my statement on it since their web site product brochure says it is NOT recommended for SP / LV systems.

Mercon LV info

LUBE REPORT: Ford Unveils New Transmission Fluid

I don't think that I would go 150k on the fluid. I will probably stick to 30k intervals
