Hey guys, I'm going to be replacing my battery soon. I currently have OEM Ford batteries, but want to switch over to AGM. I was looking at the Optima batteries, but don't know if they are a good choice or if I should go another route.
Do a search on this, it has been discussed many times. Not many use Optimas, I did once and did not go back to them. It is hard to beat OEM Motorcraft. Here in the great state of TEXAS the heat is really rough on batteries. I use Wally's and let them replace em for free every two years or so.
I have switched to Wally's too. They are only a few miles away, label the batteries with the month so you can get the youngest ones there and can just scan them to exchange.
I am a sailor, which means I can really lean the battery box over. Spilling acid on the deck is not a desirable effect and there's no alternator running to charge the batteries - so I had to do my homework on batteries. AGMs are great for very specific purposes, and they are crazy expensive. They are also very particular about how they are charged and how they are stored. AGMs are real wimps when it comes to how much energy they store. I have half the amp-hours in my AGM, when compared with the deep-cycles I had on the powerboat - and our truck battteries still beat the AGMs for capacity. For the cost, the risk of damage, and the reduced capacity - I'd have to have a real good reason to even click on a search for information beyond what I've already learned. Each driver has their own environment to contend with, so some research is needed before taking my word on this.
Rule of thumb for switching to AGM is to go 20% over the rating you normally would use. AGMs have their uses, but as starting batteries they would not be my first choice. My original Motorcrafts lasted 9 years so i went with them again.
