I would not consider it an FT motor, and it probbaly has little in common with FT or FE motors. But, this is based just on what I've see here. FTs are 361 and 391 designations. I never heard of the 389.
The main differecnes from FE to FT is the crank snout diameter is larger on the FT and the distributor has a different shaft diameter. Both can be remedied to work with FE components as far as I know.
389's were heavy duty FT motors used in ' 77 & '78 . There was no difference in actual displacement as the 391. I worked on a lot of them at the dealership in F-750's . They were heavy duty 4 bbl. motors. You could interchange them with 361's and 391's. We had better service out of the 361's and 330HD than the rest. woody

I'll add that the 389 is indeed in the FT family. I think the 374 is as well. I also will come out of the closet and disclose that I have a 359 in the FT family as well. It's a week-old baby in my fleet.
I don't know if external dimens. are different than the FE family.
While the 330 is in the FT family, there were different versions of it. I am just beginning to find out about this hither-to-unknown family of Ford truck engines. I look to this board to find out more. Our own John Wilkerson has directed me to the book "How to rebuild your big block ford" for more info on the FT.
