Question 330,389

What family are the 330hd and md and 389 out of?? One of my neighbors had one in a dump truck when I was little but he couldnt tell me anything of it other than it was a darn good motor (330md) I want to try to find one to put in place of a 302 c4, dont tell me id be better off with something else because this truck is hardly used and i think it would be unique. Also will it bolt up to a FE ore 351 M trans??

They're from the FT family, a HD version of the FE engines. The bell will bolt up to the FE pattern but there's differences with the crank flange and pilot hole.

It'll be a good torquey low reving motor, virtually indestructable, and it will bolt to an FE bellhousing, as BBB said. I'd look for a C6 for it, and get a low stall torque converter, the stock one would probably work good. What's it going into?

I never heard of the 389. Is that an HD motor from the same series as the FT? I've heard of the 391, but not a 389.

The 389 was an MEL engine around 1958 if I remember right.

The 389 i am refering to came in some 1970s dump trucks. The vehicle it might go in is a 1977 F150 2wd longbed farm truck. The 302 that it had is very worn out and i like Fes better so if it is the same then i like it
Also does anybody know about the BIG industrial motor from the 60s like the 401 477 and 534, I read about these in a Ford trucks since 1903 book! They sound like a cool motor that if some one were able to build into a performance motor would knock the snot out of anything!!

I understand that the big 477/535 are really big motors, not just CID, but the actually size is bigger.

I read about these in a post a while back and it seems that there is nothing in the way of performance parts for these.

It would be an interesting project, but if I were looking for a really big motor I think I start out with a stroker kit for th 460 block.

I have nver heard of any reformance parts for the 401 477 or 534 ethier, and yes they are very huge blocks, so huge i doubt they would fit in a full size pick up but i would love to have one of these as well, i recently found one in somebodies shop that had been sitting for years but right now i dont have the funds or time for it, Plus even with there monsterous size one of these mills only had 266 horsepower that is a good amount but i think it could be better maybe simply milling the heads would help a good bit. As to the 389 ive never seen one of these but at one point i thought they were diesel because i read it was labeled XD but its not from what i understand. As to the 330hd it is as of today sitting in my shop and ready to go i pulled it out of a trashed ex schoolbus for $10 what a deal. The bus ran pretty well i even drove it around i even got the rear axle and clark 5 speed trans with but those are for future plans. I have a C6 for it but it may need to be flushed. Thanks everybody for the info!

The Clark 5 speed, if it is the overdrive 5th gear unit, is a real find. If your not going to use the tranny it will be worth some bucks.

My 1979 Motor's Truck Repair Manual lists the 389 from 1975 through 1978, ranging in torque from 175 to 180 at 3400-3600 RPM, and HP from 302@2700 to 318@2400.

All 4 barrell carbs. Note says "Heavy Duty" - not medium or light. Another picture clearly shows three compression pings on the pistons, just like the rest of the MD and HD motors.

It must have more torque, numbers don't make sense for anything with 389 cubes and 300 HP????

Stupid me, I got them backwards! 300 ft/lbs of torque, only 180 HP.
