Red face what have I got on my engine stand?

ok, here is the challange (excuse my stupidity but it is new to me)
I have a ford motor with a reverse 501 what does the reverse 501 mean? The other block numbers are D4TE which means I have a one of a 359,361,389,391 and possable a 330MD.
what is a 330MD? (never heard of it)
Personally it looks like a 390 to me. I really do not understand the difference between the 390 and 391 but read somthing about a different crank.
Any help anyone can give would be great.

A reverse 105 is a foundry casing ident only, means nothing towards which engine you have. First do you know what it came out of? All the engines you named are FT engines but the 105 was also used in the FE engine series. The numbers on the block D4TE means it is a truck motor but could well be a 360 or 390 from the light truck series rather than a FT, which are heavy trucks. What are the numbers on the heads, between the center spark plugs? What is the number on the intake manifold? A picture would be helpful.

Its most likely the D4TE Truck engine 360/390.. whick is a very good block and has the extra crank saddle webbing, like the CJ blocks...and "IF" it is...there may be enough meat in the cylinders to take it out to a 4.130" bore (428 size) But dont even try to take it out that far without having a sonic map test done..

Just my rule of thumb, to safely take one out that far and for me to feel comfortable about it..I wont run the thrust side cylinder walls any thinner than .100"....But thats just me...I do know of guys that have run them as low as .070" and got away with it.. JMO

GF, Most FE engines have either 352 or reverse image 105 (screwup) on the front of them. I believe all of the reverse image blocks have additional webbing in the crank area, be either a 360 or 390 engine block. The 360 and 390 use the same bore block with the 360 using 352 rotating assembly for early smog control.

FE for Ford Edsel was only used in cars and pickups and the FT in F600 and larger trucks. The FT block is different at the crank and dizzy openings requiring FT parts only. 330 MD = Medium Duty there is a 330 HD too.

best of my knowledge

Welcome to FTE.

If the crank snout if like 2" in diameter, it's likely a "truck" 361,391, etc FT. If the snout is only 1 1/4" diameter, then it's a std 360/390 FE.

Stick a coat hanger down the cylinder with piston at BDC, mark the coat hanger, rotate til TDC and remeasure with coat hanger. The stroke will at least tell you if 360 or 390.

D4 is 1974 date.

Wasn't the 330 used extensively in U-Haul trucks?

I think that was the 330 "MD" - the 330 "HD" was used in F600's that I DO know from my brother's '68 F600.

my block is also a reverse 105 and D3TE, 73' instead of 74', and it "used to be" a 360. It's a good block, and has to the best of my knowledge and mine is an example of having more webbing that John referred to. and it sonic tested to be ok for a 4.13 bore. But dont just go on heresey, have yours checked if you want to take it out that far.

what is the casting on the crank? or stroke length?

I'll chime in w/ my D3TE engine block- it has the extra webbing and was sonic tested before it got built (it had been in a flood and under water). My machinist found the walls to be extra thick, but it cleaned up @0.030 and the 410 pistons we found via a buddy were 0.030 over KB's. Had we not found those pistons, it would probably been opened to 428 standard bore because pistons were easier to find, it's a torque motor (no high RPM's), and somebody had put a 428 crank in the block w/a '67 410 ID tag on the intake. One of my weirdest junkyard finds ever!
