Not that it helps much, but exterior dimensions of a 6.9 and 7.3 IDI are the same

Last i remember on weights
302--520
351M / 400--640
460--720
6.9 / 7.3 --1200
As i recall it those are dressed weights, 351W cant be much more than a 302.

Just by looking, the IDI is about the same dimensions as a 460. I stuffed in place of a 400 and it fit pretty well, the bottom is alot wider, and the zf5 sits alot higher than the old 4spd.

My swap I'm hoping for a 6.9 4 speed but if I must I will go 7.3 zf5

Wonder how I'd support that much weight on the front end and stop it from tipping forward in an f150

I would go 7.3 /ZF over 6.9/t19 anyday, but thats just me i guess.

Best way i can think of would be a D60 with SD springs if 4x4. Otherwise a set of coils from a diesel ought to help for a 2wd. Not sure if the 150s are kingpins or balljoints in the 2wds, but balljoints wont like the diesel. The very reason i found a 79 F-350 for my swap. I do know there are some IDI broncos running around might try and find one of em and see what they did.

you would have to strengthen the frame. easiest way would be to either box the frame, or use a 250 diesel frame with 150 rolling gear.

look for a 250 diesel 2 wheel drive, and that will give you the base to build off of.
add the 150 rolling gear, and the body and cab of choice.

too bad you couldn't find a cummins 4bt.that would be so much nicer build.i really don't think you could keep tires on the front of an f150 with so much weight.id would cost less to just find a small diesel in the long run imho.

I think the frame would be fine, but there is the front end... I have to ask, why not just get a diesel pickup? If your set on a diesel and more specifically an idi.. i hate to be the one to say it, but a 6.2 is light and would work well in a half ton, albeit a 4bt would be my engine of choice in a light duty app.

7.3 because theyre more updated and have better parts, theres more of them and easier to find, slightly more power, and zf5 for mpg and drivability, to be blunt, 4spds suck to drive.

Why not just get a 2wd F250 diesel and throw the front clip/body/whatever from your F150 on it? 2wd IDI's can be had for around a grand and under ah day er day round here.

And as far as the 4 speed goes, I like it because of the low 1st and 2nd my ZF doesn't really have. And 4 speeds are bulletproof and cheap.

x2 with what sixbanger is saying...

My first IDI was a 4 spd...i got 21 mpgs driving down the freeway @ 65, That Transmission is damn near bulletproof, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Its a damn fine transmission and I will stand by it til they quit making parts. The BorgWarner T-19 4 speed close ratio transmission is the one your looking at. Usually mated to a BorgWarner 1356 transfer case if 4x4.

If your looking for mileage and 2wd:

4bt cummins is yoru best bet, or better yet, find a mid 80's IIRC Ford Ranger with a 2.2l Perkins diesel. Gets great fuel mileage(like....40-50 plus mileage), only came in 2wd IIRC and a turbo is the way to go with them.

I live in Ontario as u see I'm part of the ontario chapter ! Woot woot love my fords.

I agree a 4Bt is probably my best bet but in Ontario finding a 4BT under 4k dollars is like pilling teeth from a gator!

As for the 250 IDI 2WD I found an 85 rotted bed Origonal owner truck with 300k Km not miles on it with a 6.9 4 speed for 1,000 here but it was 26 hours north of me. Yes Ontario is that big.

The reason I want a f150 is it's smaller and I have a small driveway I was even debating a ranger has too be 87 or older to avoid all emission laws in Ontario , minus a few but I got that covered. I agree the 6.2 is light but not really a 6.2 or 6.5 fan as my name says I'm a IH ford fan. I am aware that cummins is in bed with ford also so let's kill that motion real quick.

I recently sold my 2000 cummins and my diesel smart car ya boi !

I just want an old simple reliable diesel that isn't 100 feet long that IDI I found was extcab LB looking at ext cab short box or reg cab long box.

The whole point of this is I want the whole swap to cost 5k or less.

I agree 7.3 are much easier to find in Ontario land of the rust bucket !

I've been there, seems like I saw a lot of old fords. Yeah, they were all rusted out, but I'd just keep looking. Find something with a solid drivetrain and swap out rusty junk unil shes relatively clean. And BTW an F150 has the same physical body size as an F250. All the body parts are the same. You can find RCLB IDIs all the time, and it's not hard to make a super cab into a shortbox.

Serious the cabs are the same size ?

Maybe I'm just an idiot but I thought the 250 cab was physically bigger.

And are you implying cutting a frame from a LB to a SB ?

I'd honestly prefer a Ranger over an f150 my only dilemma is I'm 6 foot 5 don't know if I'd fit lol

Even a RCSB 250 would be awesome !!! 2WD

My main motivations are a hauler + Milage and stacks that's all I really want is that so hard ?
