1978 power steering

hi

Will a power steering box from a 1978 F350 (6 inline) fit a 1978 f100 (6 inline) side by side, the section with the rag joint is longer by 2 inch. the bolt patter to fit on the frame is the same, it fit.

is there an adjustment on the steering column side?

(and yes i have already paid to have it rebuilt)

thanks

G

Ford used two different ones, sounds like you have one of each. I don't believe you can move it closer that much , not sure.

If the box itself is bigger by two inches the shaft may be a bigger,See if your rag joint flair will fit if it does the steering column could be reworked to fit the new box...It will just be 2 inches closer to ya.

Try tapping on the rag end , it may slide ...They are 2 piece shafts designed to collapse in a crash (IIRC) ...

You'd have to break the tack weld holding the mounting bracket and re tack weld in right spot, drill out 2 3/8 to 1/2 inch holes place back into truck find your center mark and tack then remove and weld up....just dont get it too hot well welding.... Not difficult to do if you dont have a welder a muffler shop could do it for a couple of bucks.

you mean the bracket that is on the steering shaft (the one that actually connect to the rag joint) just brake the weld, move it back and reweld it?

The one that holds the column under the dash (where the bolts go) there is noway to shorten the column itself.

hi

i think i just saw the light. you mean under the dash, there is a bracket with about 5 bolts, break the weld, redow the weld, 2 inch closer to the rag joint. all it would do is move the the ENTIRE steering colum toward the driver???

Good morning.

well, it work, i moved the bracket under the dash. move the steering column closer to the driver. I also needed to cut the 1 1/2 inch off the steering column. (then rewleded the bracket.

So far so good everything is working. thank you everyone.
(when i figure out how to put picture in my post I will had some.)

Now , to power brake.

all the parts i got are from a 1978 F350.

power steering box, pump, bracket, cooling rad = $20
power brake booster = $20

lots of sweat, curse, beer, burn. = free (maybe not the beer)

when the ##$%%^%^ finally worked last night, priceless.
