I'm wondering if anyone out there has put shorty headers on an E series van. I have a 94 E-150 conversion van with 5.0. I believe that I am experiancing the cracked exhaust manifold syndrome and I am thinking about replacing stock with headers. Any thoughts.
Headers are always a great upgrade. One, they help with power and mileage. Two, they make a motor sound great! I dont have any experiece with the E series, but it should act the same as any other. Do you have anything else on this truck? Sometimes people upgrade the whole exhaust when something like that happens, to get the full effect of the headers. My manifolds crapped out on my 96 Bronco 351 and I swapped everything. Headers, Y, and catback. Just an idea.
I probably am going to do the whole exhaust when I do it as I think that I am going to end owning this till I die. Besides I am only at 120,000 with three payments left ( last time I do a five year note). I am looking at headers and a Cat Back. I am thinking 4 inch single with the shortys into a collector then into the cat.
Have you managed to find aftermarket parts for your truck? There doesnt seem to be too much for the E series. As for a 4", that would probably be overkill. The bigger the piping, the less velocity the gases have. You will probably find that you lose low end torque with that size pipe and the 5 liter. 3" will flow plenty, and the exhaust note is still very decent. Some even say 2.5" is good, but Ive found 3" to be a pretty universal benchmark. Are you going to upgrade your Y pipe too? I dont know if anyone makes one right off the shelf, but I know muffler shops can fab up a higher flowing one for ~$175 or so (at least around here). Im just starting a 4 year note on my bronco, and the end is NOWHERE in sight. How do you like your E overall? Ive never owned one, but I have had friends who have, and they like it better than all the other fullsize vans out there.
The only place that pipe size matters is in the primary tubes of the header. There, smaller = more low end torque and gas mileage. After the collector, run the same size as the collector. After you merge the two sides, run the biggest pipe you can and the highest flowing mufflers you can get. It will reduce back pressure, allowing the engine to perform better.
Overall I like it. There are times that I would like to shoot it but for the most part it has been ok. The biggest problem that I seem to have is with the front end. It seems to eat brake pads up front. But that could just be old age time compression on my part. It seems like everything I did was just yesterday. I have also replaced all the front end components with the exception of the bushings. Biggest problem was upper ball joints. Then I would just have to say that the quality seems a little down for that year. Nothing specific just a feeling. This is my tenth Ford and I think that I have had ones that were better put together. She is however a good old mule. She just took us from Florida to Maine for the fifth time. Belt tensioner broke two days after I got back. Thank god for this forum
