Nankang Mudstar tires?
Nankang Mudstar tires?
Hello everybody.
I've been looking around for another set of mud tires to replace my Super Swampers. I definitely don't want to have to buy any more of those tires due to their price and they don't last nearly as long as the other mud tires I've had offroad.
So I stumbled across some Nankang Mudstars while surfing the web, I think the other name for them was Nankang N889. They are VERY cheap, only about $200 per tire for 315/75r16. Plus I'd have to buy a set of 16" rims to replace the 16.5" tires I have my mud tires currently on. So I wanted to know if anybody had any experience with Nankang's tires, or specifically the Mudstars. It seems almost too good to be true, but sometimes that isn't the case.
Thanks for any help I can get!

did you get these? How did they hold up? Look for some 33's for my 75 F100. It only gets driven maybe 2000 - 3000 miles a year so just about anything I buy will dry rot before tread runs out. Mostly on-road but she gets muddy every once in a while.
Hey sorry for the late response. No I didn't purchase these tires yet. My Thunderbird has had a series of transmission and electrical issues that I've been fighting with for the last year or so, so my money has been tied up there.
I had still planned on getting these tires to at least test out when I get the extra money together. I hadn't found one bad review either when I was looking at them, 2 years ago anyway.
Crazy, let us know what you think about them, initial impressions and all.

I started looking around for some new tires recently and came across the Nankang Mudstars and subsequently, this thread. Anybody want to post their experience with these tires?
I have been buying BFGs since the 80s, but the kinda "retro" tread pattern on these caught my eye, very Buckshot-like but in a radial and for less $$ (run about $200-$250 ea delivered).

I just put a set of Ironman All Country MTs on; very stout, E-rated tire. Good price, but too soon to say how fast they wear.
Ironman is actually a Hercules tire company who has been making heavy truck tires also.
Nankang, Hercules and Ironman are new to the light truck/passenger market; as compared to the "Household Name" tire companies. They know tires, never-the-less.
Only downside is; they're made in Asia I think.
There's probably on one or two tire brands that are still American these days.
Buy them !!

I bought my first set of Nankank mudstars about 18 years ago. I ran them about 30,ooo miles over 12 years and they are still on my truck today. A 1991 W250 (Dodge firft gen. 5.9 turbo fiesel 4x4 w/ factory 5th wheel hitch.)
My Nankangs have 80% tread. 889s load E 10 ply. Truck calls for 45 psi front and 90 psi.
They are the best mud tires i EVER had !!
Even good on ice. Now they are dry rotted but still run great.
Ive put a st on a Durango. Oem size 5 tires for 650.oo. gettin hard to find, buy them or call me. Ill buy em.

I have a set of 33x12.5R15’s on my F100. Installed probably 10 years ago before my 8yr restomod started. Aside from being off the rims for a few days while getting them powder coated, the tires have been there holding air the entire time without ever losing any pressure. Although I am a bit concerned with their age, they seem to be in great shape. Lots of thread left. Probably 10k+ at this point. No complaints at all.
When I replace I’ll probably switch to MFG M/T’s but that because I want an upgrade. Not from a lack of performance from these.

Thread is 13 years old, BUT here's an update anyhow since it's been revived. I have bought and used up 3 sets of these tires. One set of tires were 315/75R16s. The other 2 sets were 265/75R16s. I paid something like $600 shipped for the larger tires, and the 2 sets of smaller tires I paid $400 shipped. This was probably 2017ish timeframe.
Short review: Mediocre tires at a good price.
The things are absolute death traps in snow and in heavy rain. Typical for this tread pattern, so I expected it. I got about 20k miles out of both sets of the 265/75R16s. The 315s were only used offroad, and held up well for that. I eventually sold the 315s for about what I had into them a few years ago.
Looks like the Mudstars have since been discontinued, which is a shame. For the price, they were a decent offroad tire.
