Flywheel replacement difficulty
Flywheel replacement difficulty
Hi all!
I am looking at purchasing a 1983 F350 with the 6.9 IDI diesel motor and 4 speed manual transmission. The seller states that the flywheel is missing 1+ teeth and thus has some difficulty starting. My question is- How hard is it to replace the flywheel? Is it a job you can do in a few hours in the backyard, or is it something that would be better taken to a professional?
Thanks for your time,

Most manual trans flywheels have a replacable starter ring gear. If the flywheel is in good condition, that would be a far less expensive route to take.
Dropping the trans to access the clutch/flywheel is not that difficult, but it helps if you have a transmission jack.
Since you'll be taking the clutch off anyways, this would be a great time to replace it if it isn't in very good condition.
