The truck is a 1976 f100 I6 300 Flairside long bed with a NP 435 4 spd. I just about got the funds up for overhaul/replace my trans. It is grinding getting in to 3rd, sometimes down shifting in 2nd. My question is, what should I look for on the flywheel as far as wear, condtion, etc and what does a good flywheel look like for that matter. Since I am going to be taking out, replacing the trans and cluch I should know that the flywheel is in order. It will be fun wrenching on the old girl, also going to be great to drive smooth again. All knowledeg is appreciated. Thanks
Pretty much anytime you replace the clutch you should have the flywheel "re-surfaced" which removes any glazing or scaring on the surface.
If the glazing and scaring it extremely bad then the flywheel will need replaced. But, that would only truly occur if the clutch was beyond grenaded and the person driving it just kept pushing it.
As for the grinding, it may just need a fluid change, the clutch not disengaging properly can do that as well. Also the shift stops.
