Well..lets start off with the draining. I always use the big green containers that are open on the top, like often used for coolant. So that typically helps. Not so much today. I slowly unscrewd the drain bolt. As soon as it was out, the Niagra Falls effect took place. And while I attempted to located / catch the waterfall looking oil stream. It wasnt the best catch. So yeah, that was a mess. No big deal, kind of expected it. Then when i went for the filter, i loosened it and let it drain til it stopped. I then proceeded to carefully unscrew it fully and lower it. Well of course it was slippery, so i was careful. not careful enough. it slipped and fell in the oil pan, splashing wildly. I was laughing at this point. In all my years of changing oil, ive never made such a mess.
if you locate the catch pan about 18 inches aft of the drain, cover the ground with either cardboard or plastic sheeting, and wear gloves, then there is a chance you may only get oil on half of what you are are trying to protect
