Need help with diagnosing possible fuel problem

My problem is back after running fine with the new carter 4070 for several trips. right around 1/4 a tank the other day it died at 20 mph. That morning I had taken an hour trip each way through a canyon pass as well with no problems. cools off and runs for 5 min the slowly looses pressure and dies. What is it that this happens right at 1/4 tank of gas? Is the sending unit going bad or the sock in there messed up? I pulled the tank tonight and am having it boiled out tomorrow. Do I need to buy a new sending unit or what do I look for in the original one that its bad? If I still have the same problem after this I am going to totally loose it.
