Do you have a vented gas cap? Leave it loose and take it for a ride.

Do you think your getting "air bubbles" in the gas line? Just an off the wall thought... Did you change the gas tank cap by chance? Is it the proper type? If the cap isnt allowing air in the tank, you won't get the fuel flowing through the line uninterupted. You'll get hick-ups in the line.

checking the vented cap is a good idea.

also- you mention that the tank is clean. give us some details around that- did you clean it?

i think the shop was right with their initial diagnosis- low fuel pressure.
but the problem isn't the pump. since everything else is pretty much new...that pretty much leaves just the tank.

i'd try pulling the line off at the pump, and blowing some air back into the tank (with the cap off). your observation about the low fuel level in the clear filter makes sense here. i'm betting something's plugged up.

Took it for a spin with gas cap loose, problem still exists.

The shop eyeballed the tank and said it appears to be nice and clean. I will check that.

What about timing?

Took a chance on a $13 Harbor Freight timing light and it works fine. Timing was close to TDC so I tweaked it to the spec of 4 degress advanced. Idle is a little lower but otherwise not much difference problem still exists.

it has been my experience that a filter before the fuel pump makes for a hard siphon causes the pump to over heat and not pump

My (somewhat educated) guesses. It is a fuel-starvation issue caused by either: 1. Water in the gas. Unlikely.
2. A plugged filter or more likely a plugged fuel sock in the tank. A blast of air will get rid of the sock but not the very fine particles that are plugging it. (Those clear filters are worse than worthless.) I am thinking very fine particles of rust, which only the best filters will catch, are somewhere in this problem.

Thanks Eric. The clear plastic fuel filter was replaced with metal Hastings. Also one was added before the fuel pump.

I was just looking inside the tank and it sure looks clean- I can see nice clean bottom, no dirt. I can't really see the sock, so not sure where that is or how to get to it. I'll go look again. At any rate it's going back to the shop in the morning so they can have another go at it. They've promised to take another look with labor charges on hold.

The PerTronix kit will be here this week also.

I'm having the same issue with a 65 F-100 (has 1972-Mustang-302 with aftermarket electric fuel pump). Where would u start if you did it all over again?

""pranking each other...like putting a BB in the fuel line"" - Seriously !!! I'm old school or maybe I'm just old, but messing with some one elses ride like that might very well cause some one to offer that person some serious hurt in return. I must live in a different time because that is not just a prank... HUMMMMM

Joshua, as I admitted, I am not the best at diagnosis but I’ll share based on what I’ve learned here. Most of what I’d say will be covered if you review this thread.

First of all, is your problem exactly the same? Mine is consistent, only at speeds between 60-65mph. The issue where it died at a slower speed only happened once.

If the symptom is exactly the same, then it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start with a full tune up if one has not been done recently, including plug wires.

That being said, focus on the fuel system. Change the fuel filters. After that, get a fuel pressure test done and go from there. Carb rebuild is pretty easy and the kit for mine only cost $15.

Solved?

Okay, I think we have this whipped. The shop still wasn’t seeing enough fuel pressure at the carb, so they replaced the new Carter P74019 fuel pump with an AC Delco EP247 continuous-pressure pump and things are doing much better. Thanks for the input and ideas.

I HAVE A 1963 f100 with 223 i6 and I just bought the clifford package with headers, intake and weber 38/38 with a redline fuel regulator. SAME THING it was running fine and then it missed on the highway the first day i took it to work. Felt like a timing miss or spark miss though. It cooled off and ran fine but at my lunch break it dies and wouldnt start and I had to get towed back to the shop that helps me here in canoga park. we have been trying everything. I bypassed the regulator with a new mechanical fuel pump and fuel pressure gauge that would read 4psi for about 6 minutes then start to drop until 2psi then die. We are installing the carter 2070 on Monday and I am seriously hoping this helps. I have 2.25 pipes all the way back with flow monster 18" glass packs. Damn she sounds good but I need her running in tip top shape since I just spent my entire savings on this package. Do I need to rejet? I am not sure what the stock jets were but I have read that a lot of guys with this type of setup have rejetted and got great results. Any pointers on what jet sizes? anyone have tuning tips with this carb and I also have been told to check the float level as it may be off new from factory.
