After seeing pics and reading the description, HELL NO. You'll find one in a lot nicer shape than that for the same money. No need for all the junk along with it. No reason to spend a paycheck on a rust pile with added junk (you don't know if the 300 runs, but of course he says it does!) in the bed. Walk, no RUN away from that.

 

Too much rust for that price. If it was 100% rust free, then OK but not the way it is. The pedals moving is a sign of bad rust, ask IDIDieselJohn about rust!

Just wait and see what comes up next. Maybe offer him some cash for the 300 and maybe it will be better than what is in your F150 to get you by a little longer.

I just found a 1986 Ford F-250 XLT 4x4 with a C6 for 900.oo cash, with 128,000 original miles.= That old beast is quite typical of what's commonly available around here.
(It needs glow-plugs, 2 batteries, the fluids changed but not much else, except a through cleaning, to last me a LONG, LONG time for pulling my boat. Even the interior is intact.)

That being said, at this point in time, you might well find an '89 with a 6.9 or a '85 with a 7.3.
The motors are almost 100% interchangeable, and someone might have dropped in another motor along the way.

The main way to tell if you have a 6.9 or 7.3 is to look at the head bolts - If a 1/2", 12-point socket fits on one of the head bolts, it's a 7.3.
If a 7/16" 12-point socket fits, it's a 6.9... at least for the purposes of power level and internals.

 

So i am looking at buying a 1986 Ford Motorhome with the 6.9L Engine. It has 166,000kms on it. How would it do on fuel on a long Trip? Lets say if i was pulling a 2009 Ford Escape?

 

Better than a gas engine, but a lot less power. It'll probably pull just fine at lower speeds, but you won't be going up mountains at highway speeds - remember, new, it only had 170 HP, at the crank, at sea level.
Fuel economy... maby 10-12? I can't say for certain.

 

Im trying to imagine how slow that would be... the escape has more hp lol. It will do it tho, and decent mileage.

 

If it had been properly maintained for most of its life, has new fuel/air/other filters, has good IP timing, has good LRR tires, has a new IP and injectors, has newly greased bearings and new diff oil, has a good torque converter, and runs tip-top, then I'd say that Motorhome could get 14mpg on it's best day with a tailwind. However, It's highly unlikely you have a tip-top RV engine. More likely, you have a motorhome that hasn't been maintained well, has old filters, bad timing, crappy cheapo tires, an IP with 166K on it, worn wheel bearings, original TC, and runs shabby. If that's the case, you could have as low as 6mpg or less. Take it to a good diesel mechanic first to determine if the engine has any issues. Find the oldest mechanic in the shop, because none of the younger guys will know how to work on a non-computerized diesel.

Which way are you headed? If you are headed into the prevailing winds, then you'll lose 2-3mpg just fighting the headwind. But if you have the winds primarily to your back, you get a lot of help. I can tell the difference in my IDI Van depending on the wind direction, so you'll get it like a sail in that RV.

Like the other people said, you'll have a slow time in the mountains without a turbo. It doesn't get up the hill fast, but it always does.
