jdncowboy, Check out www.intellidog.com for some performance numbers and repair tips. Stock, these things had roughly 180 hp. Maintenance history would be key plus. At 147k, the things that would be going bad would be the injectors and injection pump, glow plugs and glow plug relay system. If you could check compression before the sale, that would give you a good idea of the condition of the motor. See if the PO had kept up with additives, fuel/Oil/Air filter changes and updated the return lines. Otherwise these engines are pretty bullet proof. Also ask about the mileage it gets. That would give you a good indication of the overall condition. I bought one that was smoking getting bad gas mileage. Ended up replacing most of the above and then some.
btw..I'm right up the road from you in San Carlos. Good luck... others with the 6.9 88 will be able to give you more insight.

if it is an 87 with a 6.9, it did not come with a 5 speed. if it came with a 5 speed, it is 88 or newer, and has a 7.3.

unless someone made it with parts from different year trucks.
