installing a brake controller

I am installing a trailer brake controller and have run the blue wire up front and I know the black and white wires got to the battery. My question is on my 96 f250, what color wire on my truck does the red wire go to? I was told it goes to the brake switch, but there are 2 wires there and I do not have a service manual or wiring scmatic to look at.

Your truck has a plug under the dash that you PLUG the brake controller into. No need to cut or spice ANYTHING

Are you talking about the 3 pin connector under the dash that have the "trailer" labels on them? Were these 3 wires originally unconnected to anything and siliconed off? I'm having trouble after uninstalling a brake controller someone else put on and wasn't done right (wires disconnected, my wires ended up frying, etc).

You have to buy a pigtail for the factory connector. I just installed one in my 94.

Simular to this.

Simular to this.

1996 Ford F-150 Brake Control Wiring Adapter, Ford 20260 :: Vehicle Trailer Wiring Harnesses :: Trailer Wiring :: Hitch Anything

Correct. you need the adapter show above to butt connector to the back of the brake controller. The it PLUGS right into the trucks harness under the dash
