Okay, so I am finally digging into installing a 7 pin connector and brake controller on my '88 E250. It had a 4 pin that the previous owner told me he had spliced in. I unwrapped the electrical tape and found this
I then started digging under the dash and found this
Now does this mean that at some point this vehicle already had a 7 pin/brake controller and that this is the wiring for it? If so, I should be able to just add the 7 pin and hook up the controller to the existing wiring....correct?
Every brake controller I have seen has 4 wires coming off it. That plug looks like a 3-wire to me.
Do you have a volt / ohm meter? With a meter and a little detective work you should be able to figure out what those wires are and where they go. They could be abandoned brake controller wires, and easily brought back to life for your install.

Thanks. I am going to get my meter out to test and make sure. I know most of the plugs now have 4 wires because they have one for a dash light. Since my van in so old (1988) I don't believe it has one. If that plug is not it, I will have to dig under the dash some more. That one just popped out when I looked under.
Sorry to advise that Ford did not make any factory installed wiring on the '88 year models and more specifically the "E" series vans had even less wiring than most trucks. The wiring in your photo has wiring with tracer colors (i.e. red and blue wires with black stripe) that were never part of Ford trailer wiring scheme. I think you may be looking at some wiring installed by previous owner. Your model van normally requires all new hard wiring from front to rear by consumer to install/use a brake controller. Good Luck.
