OK, so I have been chasing down gremlins for a new trailer and truck I bought. Truck is a 1991 F250 Lariat. I have been having trailer wiring issues but I got it sorted out to just no trailer brakes, but all the lights work.
I took out the brake controller that a previous owner installed, as well as an additional 7 way plug at the rear. I patched up the wiring to original best I could. But the trailer brakes don't work.
There's a 3 way connector under the dash that was once hooked up to the brake controller. One of these is a blue wire, and there are two other wires with different colors. Right now I just have these taped up so they don't cause a short. But I believe one of them is live. Should I connect these wires somehow? How were they originally? That's what I'm trying to do, restore wiring to original.
There should be 4 wires under the dash the connect to the brake controller.
1. 12volt(coming from a 12v FUSED source)
2. ground(to a chassis ground, NOT the dash frame)
3. brake signal(coming from the bake switch on the brake pedal)
4. trailer brake(going from the controller to the trailer plug at the rear of the truck)
You NEED a brake controller ho have trailer brakes. You also NEED a trailer plug that has more than the 4 trailer light wires
wait, so you're saying the only way i can get trailer brakes is with an aftermarket trailer brake controller? It's not set up that way from the factory?

CORRECT. You NEED a brake controller. That is why they sell them. Not untill 2005 did Fords come with Factory brake controllers
