One other thing I was thinking is I just recently got a new clutch and flywheel put in. Would by any chance a new flywheel cause more drag then an old one causing the starter to stress.
If you can get the thing started & running, take it to Sears or Walmart or even a full-service gas station, they can do a starter draw test for you. This is the kind of test that's generally offered for free as a courtesy.
Parts store should also be able to do it but you apparently need somebody with a clue, sounds like you didn't run across such a person.
It's good that it spins, but it shouldn't be burning up your electrical system.
Your replacement solenoid was probably made in China, they are complete junk, unfortunately, with the possible exception of Motorcraft, all of them are crap. If I had seen this thread sooner I would have recommended you PM Archion for a PN for a PMGR starter for your application. They only use the fender mounted relay to engage a starter mounted solenoid that then engages the drive. If you don't have enough posts to PM, put something on here, and one of us will direct him to the thread.
So I ended up buying a new re manufactured starter, put it in and the truck started right up no problem. Hopefully the problem was just an old worn out starter.
