Choke operation problem

1979 F-150 4x4, 300-6, 4-speed. It's all basically stock, and has the carb with the anti diesel soleniod. I'm experiencing some sticking choke problems. I adjusted the choke (went way lean on the indicators), no difference. Thought maybe after a billion heat cycles the elec choke coil could be tired, replaced it, no change. It seems to always return to the "almost off" setting (idleing at 1200rpms). If I give it a quick high rev, it'll drop down the normal base idle of 750 rpm's. If I tap the accelerator pedal lightly, it returns to the 1200 rpm idle. The linkage, and entire carb for that mater, are nice and clean, not all gummed up.

Don't know much about these 1V carbs, looking for some help. THANKS !!!

Look for play in the throttle shaft. This area wears and sometimes binds.

Does it happen when the throttle cable is disconnected from the carburetor?
Point being, sometimes the cable itself can stick from rust along the cable, or even a floor mat under the pedal.

Haven't tried disconnecting the throttle linkage, I will, but the throttle is easy as pie to depress.

Worth checking. It may be as simple as the return spring binding slightly.
At least you eliminate it as a variable.

Well just played with it some more. Choke linkage moves freeley, throttle linkage moves freeley. The choke is DEFINATELY setting itself every time I depress the throttle. I've got to check one more thing, I dropped the replacement choke coil assembly and the spring/coil fell out. I may of put it back in backwards ??? Only thing that I can think of that is wrong.

This occured to me today, since it seems as though the choke is now working backwards; cold start no choke, warm up and I get choke. I thought the lack of cold choke was due to the LEAN setting of the coil, now I'm thinking maybe I'm wrong. This is not my daily driver, just a beater I drive a couple 4 times a week to my kids baseball practices (NO WAY do I want a foul ball hitting the SVO!!).

Well I'm an idiot LOL !!! I unknowingly instaled the choke coil backwards when I put it back in the choke housing. As the truck warmed up, it turned on the choke. Got it turned around and what do you know, the choke turns off

Welcome to the club!

Heh, it's always great when it's something simple.
