My buddies e99, 148k miles running DP tuner.
When he starts it cold, he has a hissing sound til it warms up. After warm, every few seconds, you can hear a quick "psst".
He says he has lost power and if in 80econo, it just dumps black smoke. Lots of soot around the top passenger side ic boot but clean everywhere else. I can't find the source of the sound but I am thinking boost leak.
I saw a write-up where somebody conducted a boost leak test with a 3" piece of pvc and air fitting clamped to the turbo inlet. They pressurized the system up to 20 PSI and sprayed soapy water on all the joints to look for bubbles forming. I think it even had a video. I can't find the thread, maybe somebody knows where it is or you'll have better luck with the search.
Well the sound he hears when it is cold is the EBPV closed and the restriction in the exhaust. Once it warms up, it could be the valve is modulating between open and closed. Usually once it is open it stays open as oil temperature is one of the parameters that the PCM uses to determine if it should close or not.
I would clean up the boot with the oil and grime. Hopefully it isn't really soot as that would be really bad that you have exhaust soot on the intake boots.
If he has lost power it is more tan likely an exhaust leak. especially with the black smoke being more than before.
Well as I was waiting on replies, I took off all of the IC tubes intake plumbing etc.
Lots of loose connections. Turbo fins are just a touch dusted but not enough to cause noticeable power loss. Bearings are all good. Cleaned all tubes n boots, put em back in and snugged em down. You could see with the marks on the threads that they definitely were loose... cranked em down further than they were before.
RPM increased is now smooth all they way up to 3k. Used to flutter a bit.
But still the tick and quick psst sound. Then it hit me. Reached into the cab and turned off the defrost. DOH!
I could tell right away it was running better and now his turbo spins up quicker and you can actually hear it.
He called when he got home and was in love with his truck again. Sez his baby is back.
Once again, thanks to the brotherhood. I wouldn't even know where to begin if it wasn't for all the years on here learning from experts.
