I think he's saying he doesn't need his key to turn the cylinder.
I know my old one was like that.
Mine too.
What was funny was that after I got the old one out, I cleaned it off to have a look see and guess what? It was just fine. I've still got it in my tool box.
Thanks for all the info. I've been out of pocket for a few days and didn't read all of the responses in time. I stopped by AZ yesterday and picked up the replacement peice. I got home and read the instructions, and saw that I had to pull the steering wheel. So... out came my big boy socket set and off came the retainer nut, and the steering wheel wouldn't budge. Went back to AZ, got a loan-a-tool steering wheel puller ($40 deposit) and back to the house onlyto realize that the threads on the tool were striped so back on went the wheel and back to AZ to return the garbage tool and get my deposit back. I'll just wait and pick-up a puller from a different AZ when I get paid next week, and replace my blinker switch while I'm in there.
Hmmm... Are you sure, did something change? The 1981 factory shop manual says differently, but maybe it changed in later years?
Anyhow, from the 1981 shop manual:
I need me one of these manuals! I also need to go a little deeper into the colomn and fix/replace my auto shifter, REAL loose and the PO has it taped on, I've been afraid to untape it to asses the damage untill I have replacement parts

I've heard it's difficult to get replacement parts for the shifters. Mine is all wore out too and flops around. I was planning on fabricating some parts to tighten it all up some day. Let us know how you tackle yours...i think this is a common problem

That happens when people use the tool, screw it up, then don't tell them when they return it. They may have had another on hand. Also, harmonic balancer pullers will do the trick as well. They will replace the tool now that they know it is damaged.
