I went to an auto parts store and picked up a Mr. Gasket 360deg air filter, about 1.25in tall and 5.5in diameter for my single barrel dreaded feedback carburetor on my I-6.
I figured that this smaller air filter would be much more beneficial as opposed to the 360 stock air filter that came with the truck, being as though I would get more direct air flow pull into the carburetor with the smaller air filter, versus the seemingly wasted space inside the stock air filter (man, it's like a house inside of there with no furniture!).
I should add that the stock 360 degree air filter is about 1.5-2in tall, and 14in diameter, had an air duct running from it leading to fresh outside air (just like the one on this 1992 IDI https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...troke-yes.html ), but it was torn off by the previous owner.
Time to cut to the chase: Is this smaller air filter really more restrictive than the stock one, or should I keep this smaller one?
The stock aircleaner brought in cool fresh air for more power in the summer, and brings up warm air from the exhaust manifold for winter driving. You can't beat the stock aircleaner for function. Your I6 with the 1 barrel carb is not going to flow large amounts of air anyway. It's designed for low rpm pulling.
brand new is probably not a problem. The issue is when it starts to get loaded up. As an air filter gets loaded up, they actualy become more efficient at filtering, unfortunatly their air flow performance and therfore differential pressure will increase.
This increase in pressure drop can and will also effect the performance of the carb. It is calibrated to run within a certain pressure band. As you choke off flow to the carb, you will increase the vacuum above the throttle plates changing how the carb performs.
Also something to think about, if you're not pulling fresh air in from the front of the truck, then you're pulling hot air in from the engine compartment.
Ideally, I would keep the stock filter and re-route the fresh air ducting. In reality, what will be the performance loss??? Hard to say. Over time, it will be there for sure. You will have to change that smaller filter more ofter for sure.
