Cold start licked, now it's back.

Afternoon gents, I have an '07 that was experiencing cold start issues this past winter (Florida). After reading up on the possible causes like FCIM, injector stiction, HPOP, ect , I decided to try changing my oil from Ford 15w40 to the new Rotella CJ-4 rated 10w30. Within a week my cold start issue cleared up and I was thrilled.

Now, fast forward to a month ago and my last oil change. I decided to use 15w40 since I still have about 20 jugs of it laying around. Less than a week later, my cold start issue was back and worse than ever. Some mornings were 4-5 seconds before she would fire off. After a couple weeks of this, I changed back to my Rotella but, the problem persists.

Finally, this morning I noticed something when leaving the jobsite. When I fired up, the oil pressure needle took a GOOD 2 seconds to jump up. I shut down and tried to duplicate the problem with no luck. Is this a helpful starting point in my troubleshooting or is a scanguage in my near future?

Edit- after reading the oil filter cap thread, I went out and checked mine. Sure enough, I have a Napa gold cap. My mechanic must have installed it while in for my tranny flush @ 60k.

Can you provide some more info? How many miles, Any codes, How does it start after warm, Have you changed the filter and cap back to OEM(1st thing to do). Not too sure about the 10w30, in S. Florida you should be using 40wt. with the hot weather.
1) Change the oil filter and cap to OEM
2) Check starting both cool(doesn't get cold in S. Fl) and after warm
3) Buy a ScangaugeII, best $160 investment you will ever make
4) Keep FTE posted, we have this challenge all the time
Good Luck and God Bless

Thanks for the help Eagle, sorry for my delayed response.

Truck has ~120K and the cold start is most noticeable on its initial morning crank. After that, they are fairly normal. I hit around 10 sites a day for work and only experience longer start times if the trucks sits for an extended period. This leads me to believe I may have a standpipe/dummy plug or other 'leak down'' related issue.

As for my oil filter cap, I ordered the OEM replacement yesterday afternoon. Really bummed at the prospect I have been running in partial bypass due to an incorrect cap.

I have not had my truck scanned so I can't speak to the codes. Guess I will be ordering a scanguage to aid in my troubleshooting adventures.

The OEM filter and cap may solve the issue. How long have the wrong ones been on the truck? Mine were on probably 4-5 yrs, took out the ICP and IPR but luckly not the HPOP(YET).
Good Luck and God Bless

I'm guessing I had my mechanic change the oil when I had it in for my tranny flush @60K. All changes after that were done by me with Motorcraft filters. Will post updates when new cap is installed.

Update-
On 4/4/12 check engine light tripped and I expected bad news to follow. New oil cap arrived and installed this afternoon. Went down to Autozone and picked up a Scanguage II to check faulty code. Results were as follows:

P0676 GPCM Cylinder 6 glow plug circuit Circuit open, short to ground, short to voltage, faulty glow plug

It seems logical a bad glow plug could be causing my ''slow start'' problem, so I'm somewhat optimistic at this point. I will be researching to verify it's the glow plug itself as I seem to recall an issue with the wiring harness chaffing.

Just wanted to keep this updated as it may serve as a troubleshooting resource for other lucky 6.0 owners.

Ok Joe, I had the exact code for 3-4 months along with many other things. I also had code PO263, #1 inj. malfunction. I found 3 wires in the harness where it crosses over the oil filter base/fuel filter base going over the driver side valve cover. The were very small chaf's, I missed them 3 times. When found I taped up good, rewrapped entire harness from valve cover to past the filter bases. Codes are gone. Takes a while to look at all the wires, and putting back in split loom is a pita but the end was good.
Good Luck and God bless

No update yet Goldy,
Been a crazy week with work and taxes. I did have a chance to perform a visual on my harness and did not find any obvious defects. Will probably be ordering new ones this month and go from there.

Many cold start issues - if they are ONLY start up issues when cold - are the FICM. You may want to check your output voltages. There's a how-to in the tech folder and also on the FAQ page of FICMrepair.com.

Let us know if we can help!
